Potential pharmaceutical agents sold as doping products
Posted Byi steroids
Researchers from the German Sport University Cologne in Germany have disclosed that non-steroidal and tissue-selective anabolic agents such as Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs) are prompting a demand high due to their performance enhancement qualities.
The study highlights that the misuse of therapeutics by athletes, without clinical approval, cannot be dismissed, as per Mario Thevis, Ph.D.
From Sciencedaily.com:
In 2008, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited the use of SARMs in sports due to their potential for misuse. WADA closely cooperates with pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies, as well as medicine agencies and drug evaluation bodies on the issue of therapeutics being misused in sports. WADA’s preventive approach was validated with the recent finding of a commercially available, non-approved arylpropionamide-derived SARM termed Andarine. This product, declared as green tea extracts and face moisturizer to pass customs, was available on the Internet at a discount price of $100 USD.
Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs) represents a class of therapeutics meant to treat health complications such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and cancer cachexia. They are gaining popularity in the world of professional sport doping community because they offer advantages of traditional anabolic/androgenic steroids such as testosterone with fewer unwanted side effects.

Bodybuilding steroids can lead to kidney damage
Posted Byi steroids
Performance enhancing drugs or bodybuilding steroids that have been used to build solid muscle mass and enhance body strength could lead to kidney damage, as per a paper presented at the American Society of Nephrology’s 42nd Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition in San Diego, CA.
This finding is concerning in today’s times when more and more athletes are depending upon anabolic steroids to stay close to fame and success.
From Sciencedaily.com:
When the bodybuilders discontinued steroid use their kidney abnormalities improved, with the exception of one individual with advanced kidney disease who developed end-stage kidney failure and required dialysis. Also, one of the bodybuilders started taking steroids again and suffered a relapse of severe kidney dysfunction.
The researchers propose that extreme increases in muscle mass require the kidneys to increase their filtration rate, placing harmful levels of stress on these organs. It’s also likely that steroids have direct toxic effects on the kidneys. “Athletes who use anabolic steroids and the doctors caring for them need to be aware of the potentially serious risks to the kidney,” said Dr. Herlitz.
This study was conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Vivette D’Agati, MD at Columbia Univeristy Medical Center. Study co-authors include Glen Markowitz, MD, Joshua Schwimmer, MD, Michael Stokes, MD, Cheryl Kunis, MD, Vivette D’Agati, MD, (Columbia University Medical Center); Alton Farris, MD, and Robert Colvin, MD (Massachusetts General Hospital).
The finding, which was not recognized till now, also suggests that long-term or habitual use of steroids could lead to severe effects on the kidney.

Three Indian weightlifters test positive for doping
Posted Byi steroids
Male lifters Harbhajan Singh and Rajesh Kumar and female Bijaya Devi were caught in World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) tests at training camp for the Commonwealth championships taking the positive tests to five.
This disclosure was made by Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) secretary Baldev Gulati. With these doping results, the national body is now facing another suspension.
From in.reuters.com:
Shailaja Pujari, a women’s 75kg gold medallist at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and men’s 56kg lifter Vicky Batta failed out-of-competition tests last month.
“I’m dumbfounded,” Gulati told Reuters on Thursday. “All of them have shown some sort of anabolic steroid.
“We’ve also had periodic dope tests. This shows something has happened in the last 20 days, just before the Commonwealth championships, (lifters) trying something, if this is correct.”
The Commonwealth meet starts in Malaysia on Sunday.
All of the competitors have denied any wrongdoing and were seeking tests of their B samples, Gulati said.
India has repeatedly faced embarrassment because of doping among weightlifters and the national weightlifting body was banned in 2004 and 2006 due to three or more lifters testing positive in a calendar year.

Manny Pacquiao to sue Floyd Mayweather in doping row
Posted Byi steroids
The Filipino world champion, Manny Pacquiao, is planning to sue Floyd Mayweather, the American’s father and Golden Boy Promotions in the next few days after a row over doping procedures.
Pacquiao was quoted as saying that people like Mayweather Sr., Jr., and Golden Boy Promotions find it amusing to accuse someone wrongly of using steroids or other performance enhancing drugs and he had enough of it.
From in.reuters.com:
“I have tried to just brush it off as a mere pre-fight ploy but I think they have gone overboard,” he added in the statement posted on his official website (www.mpboxing.com).
The WBO welterweight title bout between Mayweather Jr and champion Pacquiao scheduled for next March was called off this week after the American demanded Olympic-style dope testing and Pacquiao said on Friday his reputation had been damaged enough.
“I have instructed my promoter, Bob Arum, head of Top Rank Inc., to help me out in the filing of the case as soon as possible because I have had people coming over to me now asking if I really take performance-enhancing drugs and I have cheated my way into becoming the No. 1 boxer in the world,” he said.
“I maintain and assure everyone that I have not used any form or kind of steroids and that my way to the top is a result of hard work, hard work, hard work and a lot of blood spilled from my past battles in the ring, not outside of it.”
The 31-year-old Filipino who has never tested positive said he has no idea how steroids look like and it is his belief in God that has kept him safe and victorious through all these years.

Olympic 400m champion banned for 21 months
Posted Byi steroids
LaShawn Merritt, the Olympic 400m champion, has been handed over a ban of 21 months after he was found making use of over-the-counter products.
Merritt returned three positive drug tests and will only be eligible to compete again on 27th July, 2011 that means that he will be free to defend his defend his title at the London Olympics.
From Guardian.co.uk:
Merritt, who also won the world 400m title in Berlin last year, admitted using an over-the-counter male enhancement product containing dehydroepiandrosterone and pregnenolone.
The American Arbitration Association’s ruling confirmed Merritt had demonstrated at his hearing his positive tests were as a result of taking a product, ExtenZe, which he bought at a convenience store, and that he did not take it to enhance his track performance.
“He wasn’t training so he wasn’t thinking about track,” the ruling said. “His mind-set when purchasing the product was thinking about having sex with a woman. It never entered his mind that the product contained a steroid derivative. He admitted he did not look at the label.”
Merritt was devastated when he found out what had caused his positive tests.
The ban on Merritt was backdated to 28 October 2009.

Twenty one horses died triggering speculations of anabolic steroids
Posted Byi steroids
Twenty-one horses from a Venezuelan team competing at the US Open Polo Championship died after they all collapsed before a match in Florida.
Lechuza Caracas team veterinarian James Belden said it was unlikely that the horses had died due to a tainted medication or given anabolic steroids since they are banned in England where the team competes.
From in.reuters.com:
“From the reports I’ve received, they came out of their trailers and they were dizzy … and began toppling over,” said Terence McElroy, spokesman for the Florida Department of Agriculture. “It’s my understanding that all of these horses have died, 21 in total.”
McElroy said 15 of the horses had been transported to a state facility in Kissimmee, where necropsies and other tests would be conducted. There was no obvious indication of what had caused the horses to collapse, he said.
The polo club, located in Wellington, about 70 miles (113 km) north of Miami, confirmed in a statement that horses had died but did not cite a number. It said the cause of death had not been determined.
It is believed that the death of all horses could be possibly triggered by use of anabolic steroids.

Stubborn asthma may indicate poor use of medications
Posted Byi steroids
Findings of a new study have indicated that patients afflicted with difficult-to-control asthma are often not taking their anti-asthma medication as prescribed by their doctor.
Dr. Liam G. Heaney at Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and colleagues found that about 5 percent of adults with asthma remain difficult to control, with persistent symptoms and frequent flare-ups even with they were prescribed high doses of steroids.
From in.reuters.com:
To find out, Heaney’s group studied 182 patients referred to the Northern Ireland Regional Difficult Asthma Service. Nonadherence to anti-asthma therapy was not suspected as a major issue, and all patients denied not taking their medicine at their first visit to the clinic.
Nonetheless, it was found that 35 percent of these patients had filled no more than half their prescriptions for inhaled steroids, and these patients were more likely to have been hospitalized at least 3 times in the previous year.
Women were most apt to be lax in taking their asthma controller medication as prescribed, the researchers note in the latest issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Among 51 asthma patients who were supposed to be using oral prednisolone, blood tests showed that 45 percent were nonadherent.
Heaney and colleagues concluded that asthma could probably improve substantially if patients emphasize upon regular preventative therapy (as prescribed).

Former Cardinals slugger McGwire admits steroid use
Posted Byi steroids
Mark McGwire, the former St Louis Cardinals slugger, has admitted using steroids when he was a player including in the year 1998 when he broke the single-season home-run record, but denied they improved his performance.
The 46-year-old recently said in a statement that he did used steroids during his playing career and rendered an apology for the same.
From in.reuters.com:
McGwire belted 70 home runs for St Louis in 1998 to shatter the record of 61 set by Roger Maris for the New York Yankees in 1961. The record was subsequently broken when Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants registered 73 homers in 2001.
“It’s the most regrettable thing I’ve ever done in my life,” McGwire added in a tearful TV interview. “I apologise to everybody in Major League Baseball, my family, the Marises, Bud Selig. Today was the hardest day of my life.”
McGwire, who last played in 2001 and was hired in October as hitting coach for the Cardinals, said he wanted to set the record straight before beginning his new role with the team.
“It’s time for me to talk about the past and to confirm what people have suspected,” he said in the statement.
McGwire told MLB Network he took steroids only to overcome health issues.
The statement of McGwire was applauded by Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig.

Stress fractures may be reduced by supplements
Posted Byi steroids
A research has suggested that women who take vitamin D and calcium supplements, even for a short time, appear to reduce to risk of stress fractures.
The finding was based on evaluation of more than 5,000 female Navy recruits participating in eight weeks of basic training. One group was administered with 2,000 milligrams of calcium and 800 IU of vitamin D a day, while the other group received placebos.
From NYTimes.com:
Women in the study who took the supplements were about 25 percent less likely to have a stress fracture than those in the other group. If the findings were applied to all 14,000 women who passed through the training camp over the two years of the study, the researchers said, about 130 fractures could have been prevented.
While the findings may be of particular interest to the military, where stress fractures are a significant problem, they also offer a lesson to civilians.
The study also found that recruits who reported a history of weight-bearing exercise were less likely to have fractures. But many recruits arrive in poor shape.
The researchers presented their findings at an Orthopaedic Research Society conference.

Indian walker tested positive for Nandrolone
Posted Byi steroids
Rani Yadav, a Commonwealth Games walker who attained the sixth place in 20-km race, recently became the third Delhi CWG 2010 athlete to test positive for drugs.
The athlete had tested positive for a metabolite of a performance enhancing steroid, Nandrolone, and would be facing a hearing soon as per Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell.
From TheAustralian.com.au:
The latest doping charge is more serious than that faced by the two Nigerian sprinters who tested positive to the stimulant Methylhexaneamine, currently on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned list but due to be downgraded from January to a “specified stimulant”, meaning athletes can get off with a warning.
Nigerian 100m gold medallist Osayomi Oludamola was stripped of her medal, while Samuel Okon, who came sixth in the 110m hurdles, waived his right to a second drug test.
But Yadav could face a two-year ban from competition if found guilty of steroid use.
The news will devastate India, which made a serious effort to crack down on drug cheats in the lead-up to the Games, with widespread testing that exposed and disqualified 11 of its athletes.
The suggestion that three doping incidents in a handful of days will irreparably damage the already dented reputation of Delhi Games was refuted by the Commonwealth Games Federation president.
