Shortstop Derek Jeter reaches $67m deal with YankeesThe New York Yankees and Shortstop Derek Jeter reportedly reached a preliminary agreement recently on a US$51 million ($67 million), three-year contract with an US$8 million player option for 2014.

There was little doubt that the Yankees captain would remain in New York while negotiations moved slowly.

The guaranteed portion of the contract offered to Jeter includes a US$3 million buyout if the option is declined. If it is exercised, he would earn US$56 million over four seasons.

Orlando Salido fails to clear a drug testOrlando Salido of Mexico, winner of the International Boxing Federation featherweight crown in Las Vegas, has tested positive for steroids in a pre-fight doping test and could forfeit the title.

The boxer tested positive for nandrolone, the anabolic steroid, before taking a unanimous 12-round decision from American Robert Guerrero by judges’ scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 115-113.

The loss was only Guerrero’s second against 19 wins and a draw.

Drug Free Sport NZ has been asked by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to ensure sportsmen included in their registration pool for testing can be found at a precise time of day, 365 days of the year.

Drug Free Sport NZ’s chief executive had lobbied successfully for limiting the size of New Zealand’s registration pool.

Former Punter with NFL teams pleads guiltyA former punter with five NFL teams, Todd Sauerbrun, has pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace.

Sauerbrun entered the plea just before his trial at Denver County Court. He was sentenced to 24 hours community service, a $244 fine, and one year’s deferred judgment by Judge Andre L. Rudolph.

Sauerbrun can get out of further trouble if he stays out of trouble for the duration of the deferred judgment sentence.

Sri Lankan boxer fails to clear drug testGold medalist Sri Lankan boxer Manju Wanniarachchi has tested positive for a banned substance during the Commonwealth Games, according to the CWG Federation.

The boxer tested positive for anabolic agent 19-Norandrosterone to become the fifth athlete to fail a drug test; the previous four athletes were Nigerian trio of Samuel Okon, Damola Osayemi and Folashade Abugan, and Indian Rani Yadav.

Sri Lankan sports authorities confiscated the gold medal won by Wanniarachchi in Colombo.

Nathan Baggaley charged with steroid possession in jailNathan Baggaley, the disgraced Australian Olympic medalist, has been charged with possessing steroids in jail.

Baggaley was already serving a nine-year jail term with a non-parole period of five years for dealing in ecstasy.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency busted the Olympic medalist for anabolic steroid use in 2005 and imposed an international two-year ban on him.

Irish backpacker fined over smuggling steroidsBrendan Carter, a 22-year-old Irishman on a working holiday in Australia, has been fined more than $5000 after being convicted of smuggling steroids.

Carter arrived in Cairns on a flight from Thailand on May 11 ticking “no” to all the questions on the incoming-passenger card, according to the Australian Customs Service.

Carter made an appearance in the Cairns Magistrates’ Court and was fined $4500, and was ordered to pay $1106 in court costs.

Australian golfer admits to use of steroidsAustralian golfer Robert Allenby happily admits that he is on steroids but not to hit the ball further but to treat a medical condition. The Victorian is on a six-day course of “cortisone, steroid-based pills”, which he is taking for an old injury, joint inflammation in the right hand and arm that flared up again recently.

Allenby quipped, “I’m officially taking steroids,” as he prepared for the Bridgestone Invitational.

The player is part of a 10-strong Australian contingent at Firestone Country Club.

Lawsuit filed by NFLPA for blocking bans

Lawsuit filed by NFLPA for blocking bansThe NFL Players Association has filed a lawsuit for blocking the suspensions handed to five players.

The suit was filed recently in a United States District Court and carried out in response to penalties handed down to Pat Williams and Kevin Williams of the Minnesota Vikings and Deuce McAllister, Charles Grant and Will Smith of the New Orleans Saints.

The players were suspended after testing positive for a banned diuretic (Bumetanide) that can mask the presence of other substances, including steroids.
