ORC to test for Clenbuterol

Posted By

ORC to test for ClenbuterolThe Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) recently made a move to initiate conducting random out-of-competition testing for the presence of Clenbuterol in quarter horses, commencing July 1, 2011.

This initiative has been taken by the commission with the support of the Quarter Racing Owners of Ontario Inc.

From Standardbredcanada.ca:

In the course of the out-of-competition testing, ORC investigators will inquire as to the use of Clenbuterol. The investigators will then examine the records of the trainer and veterinarian to confirm the veterinarian’s examination of the animal, the prescription for the drug, as well as the time and dosage. These records are to be readily accessible for inspection by ORC investigators. For example, trainers should keep the records in the barn where the horse is stabled.

Trainers are reminded that under the Rules of Racing (TB 15.09.01-f) they shall maintain records relating to the particulars of any medications administered to horses in their care.

Veterinarians are also reminded that under the rules (TB 27.14), the records maintained and kept by a veterinarian shall include the name of the horse, the names of the owner and trainer, the date of the administration or prescription of the drug, substance or medication, and its nature.

Clenbuterol is sold under the name Ventipulmin as an injectable suspension and oral syrup.

James Stanton accepts doping ban

Posted By

James Stanton accepts doping banThe bid of Australian water polo star James Stanton for competing at a third successive Olympic Games is over after he reluctantly accepted a two-year doping ban.

Australia’s goalkeeper at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, Stanton tested positive for the anabolic agent clenbuterol in an out-of-competition test in Perth on September 15 last year.

From News.smh.com.au:

The backdated suspension imposed by the Australian Water Polo (AWPI) means Stanton, a veteran of 159 water polo internationals, cannot compete until October 23 next year, ruling him out of next month’s world championships and the 2012 London Olympics.

Stanton has been a mainstay of the national team, the Sharks, and was considered a strong chance to join an elite group of Australian players to have competed at three or more Olympics.

“On the advice of my legal team and with great disappointment, I announce that I have accepted a sanction after a routine out-of-competition drug test conducted by ASADA in September last year resulted in a positive finding for the substance clenbuterol,” Stanton said in a statement.

“I plan to keep training on my own during the extent of the ban so as to demonstrate to the coaches and supporters that I am serious about returning and that this will not be the end of my career,” Stanton said.

Greco-Roman wrestling champion bannedKatsuya Kitamura, the three-time Japanese Greco-Roman wrestling champion, will miss the London Olympics next year after he was banned for two years.

The 25-year-old was banned on June 13, 2011 after testing positive for anabolic steroids.

From Reuters.com:

The triple 96-kilo national champion, the first Japanese wrestler to fail a drugs test, told Japan’s anti-doping agency JADA he took the substance by accident after buying supplements abroad.

“We never thought our wrestlers bought supplements from overseas,” Japan Wrestling Federation (JWF) general secretary Yuji Takada told local media.

“This has smeared the sports community with the London Olympics coming up. We will take measures to ensure this does not happen again.”

Kitamura — who the JWF said tested positive for the banned muscle-building substance drostanolone — is not expected to appeal the ban, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported.

The wrestler has represented Japan at two world championships without winning a medal.

Kevin Vickerson handed over drug banAccording to a report by The Tennessean, Tennessee Titans reserve defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson has been suspended for four games without pay.

The ban was imposed after Vickerson was found violating the NFL‘s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances.

From Espnstar.com:

“It was kind of a rough situation for Kevin, the timing and everything,” Vickerson’s agent Tony Fleming told The Tennessean.

“He completely feels like he was innocent and didn’t do anything wrong. But for the benefit of the team and the situation, he wanted to get it out of the way and get ready for the Super Bowl run.”

Vickerson was placed on the team’s suspended list, leaving its roster at 52 players. The Titans are not expected to add a player prior to Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, the newspaper reported.

League sources told the newspaper that Vickerson tested positive for the banned diuretic Bumetanide.

Two men indicated for importing banned substancesTwo men have been indicated for importing a banned drug from China and selling it in Luzerne County, according to court documents.

Peter Sepling and John Nikoloff, the two men, conspired to import and sell gamma-butyrolactone, GBL, a banned substance sometimes used as a party drug.

From Citizensvoice.com:

A federal grand jury in Scranton has indicted two men for importing a banned drug from China and selling it in Luzerne County, according to court documents.

Authorities allege Peter Sepling and John Nikoloff, no ages or addresses given, conspired to import and sell gamma-butyrolactone, GBL, a banned substance sometimes used as a party drug, to improve muscle enhancement, and to induce sleep.

The chemical is an industrial solvent that has similar effects to the date rape drug, GHB, authorities say. The drug, commonly nicknamed “coma in a bottle,” previously was legally sold and marketed as a “dietary supplement.”

The duo is also accused of possessing anabolic steroids with the intent to sell them, according to court records.

School steroid tests hampered by legal issues

Posted By

School steroid tests hampered by legal issuesDirector of the South African Institute for Drug- Free Sport, Dr Shuaib Manjra, recently said that legal constraints and lack of budget are hampering the implementation of routine testing for steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.

It was reported a few weeks back that tests conducted at 18 of SA’s top schools revealed that about one in six pupils tested positive for a variety of illegal steroids.

From Businessday.co.za:

Dr Manjra said that the legal constraints to testing and the prosecution of pupils, unless they were taking part in a national sporting event, such as Craven Week, was an obstacle to preventing steroid use at school level.

As samples are required to be sent to the US, the testing fee is also a stumbling block.

“Unless the schools and their pupils’ parents sign an agreement that pupils can be tested, our hands are tied.

“Most schools cannot afford the testing fees, which are R1500 each,” said Dr Manjra.

This year, the organisation’s government grant to run education programmes on the dangers of stimulants and steroids in schools was increased by 55% to R10,4m. The National Lottery has also contributed R1m for educational programmes.

Dr Manjra warned that without policing of the illegal steroid industry, the education programmes will have a limited effect. “The only way to tackle the growing use of anabolic steroid drugs by school children is to get law enforcement agencies involved in cracking down on their distribution,” he said.

“There is a proliferation of underground steroid manufacturers in SA, and we need police involvement to combat the problem,” Dr Manjra said.

The study was conducted by Johannesburg Company, Drug Detection International.

Dick Butkus Promotes 'Clean' Play without SteroidsFormer Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus has not changed in many ways ever since he left the football field 38 years ago.

The days of Butkus on the field may be over but he is now making every possible effort to curb steroid use among young athletes.

From Infozine.com:

Butkus took part in a luncheon briefing for congressional staff members on Capitol Hill Wednesday, where he discussed the benefits of sports nutrition, the detriments of taking performance-enhancing drugs and his effort to educate young athletes through his I Play Clean campaign.

“The plain truth is, if you use steroids for a prolonged period of time, you’ll probably be a heart patient, die early or both,” Butkus said.

Spanish police break drugs distribution ring

Spanish police break drugs distribution ringAn investigation by Spanish police into a suspected dope trafficking ring led to arrest of seven Britons among 26 people.

The Spanish police were able to seize 700,000 doses of performance enhancing drugs and counterfeit medicines as well as 10,000 vials of human growth hormone.

From Telegraph.co.uk:

Spanish police said the Britons, who have not been named but are all believed to be residents of Marbella, were “leading members” of the alleged network. Some of the illegal substances were reportedly imported into Glasgow before being packed and distributed to Europe via Manchester.

Among others arrested was the director general of a cycling club where, according to police, several former European and world champions were members. Local media reports said the club were based in the Madrid area and that the man was arrested on suspicion of receiving a “significant amount” of the red blood cell-boosting drug EPO.

Other drugs seized in 19 property searches across Spain included anabolic steroids and substances not intended for the sporting market, including hundreds of thousands of counterfeit Viagra tablets. It was these that are alleged to have been sent through Glasgow and Manchester.

Police described the ring as the largest international organization operating in Spain dedicated to drug trafficking, growth hormone, and doping substances.
