FBI employees arrested over steroid use
Posted Byi steroids
Three FBI special agents and one FBI intelligence analyst were recently arrested on charges that they concealed their use of performance enhancing drugs, including steroids and human growth hormones.
The four individuals were charged by U.S. prosecutors for lying on forms that are used for assessing fitness for duty by omitting that they had conditions requiring the drugs and that they had taken them.
From Reuters.com:
FBI policy prohibits the use of anabolic steroids, and while they are not illegal, they are banned from many sports although many athletes and others have used them to build up muscle quickly to enhance their performance.
The use of performance-enhancing drugs has roiled the sports world where several top athletes have been accused of lying about taking steroids and human growth hormones, including former baseball pitching star Roger Clemens.
FBI Deputy Director Timothy Murphy said the investigation was continuing and the agency was cooperating.
“FBI employees must be held to the highest standards of ethical conduct,” Murphy said in a statement. “When this information came to our attention, a thorough investigation was initiated which led to today’s charges.”

Raga suspended for banned steroid use
Posted Byi steroids
Reds Minor League catcher Jose Raga was recently placed under suspension after he tested positive for a banned steroid.
A catcher with Cincinnati’s Venezuelan Summer League affiliate tested positive for Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
From Web.minorleaguebaseball.com:
Raga, a 17-year-old from San Felipe, Venezuela, had appeared in six games for the Rookie-level Reds, going 3-for-13 with two RBIs. This was the 5-foot-11 backstop’s first season in the Minors.
Stanozolol is a synthetic anabolic steroid derived from testosterone that is used by body builders as well as with animals to promote muscle growth, increased bone density and red blood cell production. In baseball, it has previously been linked to Barry Bonds, Rafael Palmeiro and Roger Clemens, among others.
Raga is the 30th player to be suspended in 2011 under the Minor League program, his ban coming two days after Braves pitcher Matt Suschak was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for amphetamines.
Raga has received a 50-game suspension, according to the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball.

Bonds lied to save reputation
Posted Byi steroids
In the perjury trial of Barry Bonds, the former baseball player and the home run King, prosecutors finished their closing argument by painting him as a slippery superstar.
Prosecutors remarked that the ex-baseball player lied to hide his use of performance enhancing drugs.
From Reuters.com:
Nedrow said witnesses’ testimony, documents, a secret recording, drug bottles and syringes show Bonds lied to protect his reputation, recklessly thwarting a grand jury investigation into the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative (BALCO).
The government agreed not to hold him accountable for his 2003 grand jury testimony — unless he lied.
“Why would the defendant testify falsely after getting immunity?” Nedrow asked. “The reason was a secret and it was a powerful secret and it was that he had been using anabolic steroids and human growth hormones. He had concern that it would taint his accomplishments.”
Bonds’ attorneys planned to deliver their closing argument on Thursday with jury deliberations set to begin as early as Friday in the highest profile U.S. case involving sports and performance-enhancing drugs.
“All he had to do was tell the truth,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Nedrow said before a packed courtroom. “He chose not to tell the truth and that’s why he’s here.”

Steroid sale leads to arrest
Posted Byi steroids
Two people suspected of trafficking steroids were arrested in Nanaimo on the weekend.
Isaac Harvey Haack and Rachel Irene Krusto, both 19, were arrested in the Bowen Road Co-op parking lot at about 5 p.m. Saturday after undercover officers arranged for making a purchase from Haack and setting up the location.
From Bclocalnews.com:
Haack and Krusto were arrested when they drove into the parking lot. Police retrieved an undisclosed amount of steroids from the black Range Rover registered to Haack and seized the vehicle.
That night, police searched the suspects’ home in the 2000 block of Goldfinch Crescent, where they seized 21 different kinds of anabolic steroids, two laptop computers and cellphones.
The total value of steroids seized is about $6,400.
The duo was allegedly involved in sale and distribution of anabolic steroids throughout western Canada by advertising on various social networking sites, said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.

National coach accused by former Olympic weightlifter
Posted Byi steroids
Suspended national coach Christos Iacovou has been accused by Christos Konstantinidis, the former Olympic weightlifter of giving banned substances to athletes.
Konstantinidis, who represented Greece at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, provided evidence to a judicial investigation set up to look into a recent doping scandal in which 11 members of the 14-member national weightlifting team tested positive for the anabolic steroid methyltrienolone.
From Reuters.com:
“The former athlete told the prosecutor that Iacovou had urged him to take banned substances and that when he refused he found himself off the national team,” the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Konstantinidis made identical claims in 1997 but was then forced to sign an apology for fear of losing his job with the police.
The court official said Konstantinidis told the prosecutor that despite signing the apology 11 years ago, he had never retracted his comments.
“He stood by what he had said in 1997 and he repeated those claims today again,” the official said.
Nikos Kourtidis, one of the three weightlifters who did not test positive said, however, he did not believe that Iacovou would give steroids to his athletes.
Prosecutor Andreas Karaflos was told by Konstantinidis that Iacovou had pressed him to take banned substances in 1997.

Greco-Roman Wrestler gets doping ban
Posted Byi steroids
Katsuya Kitamura, a leading Greco-Roman Japanese wrestler, has been banned for duration of two years after being found guilty of doping.
The ban means that the wrestler who tested positive to anabolic steroids is now out of next year’s London Olympics after banned by the Japan Anti-Doping Agency.
From Insidejapantours.com:
The Japan Anti-Doping Agency implemented the ban – for testing positive for anabolic steroids – on Monday (June 13th), ruling Mr Kitamura out of next year’s London Olympics.
Yuji Takada, who is the general secretary of the Japan Wrestling Federation, said the organisation will work to ensure others are not taking performance-enhancing drugs.
“We never thought our wrestlers were buying supplements from overseas,” he said.
“We’ve become trouble for the sports community with the London Olympics right around the corner. We will work to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Earlier this year, twenty five wrestlers and other people involved in the sport were severely punished for being involved in the match-fixing in Japanese sumo wrestling.

Drug arrests and drug testing in news on CFL season eve
Posted Byi steroids
The electrifying return specialist of the B.C. Lions, Yonus Davis, had 27 kilograms of ecstasy delivered to a home he was renting in California on April 9.
Davis was charged with one felony count of attempting to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute and facing a possible 20-year jail sentence.
From Montrealgazette.com:
In the season the Canadian Football League’s new drug-testing policy kicks in for real, the league has been hit by unwanted headlines concerning illegal substances.
Commissioner Mark Cohon is convinced the steps the league and CFLPA have taken in tandem are going to be major deterrents to any CFL player thinking of starting to use, or continuing to use, performance-enhancing drugs.
“I don’t think we have an issue that’s ubiquitous,” replied the commissioner Wednesday at McMahon Stadium, as media personnel scrambled for dictionaries. “The fact that 25 per cent of our players will be tested this year and then it gradually moves up from there is right for our league.
Hamilton long-snapper Jordan Matechuk was arrested eight days ago for trying to carry drugs — 543 anabolic steroid pills, 262 milliliters of liquid anabolic steroids and 1.25 grams of marijuana, to be precise — into the country through Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
