The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has suspended MMA phenom Cris “Cyborg” Santos for testing positive for anabolic steroids prior to her bout with Hiroko Yamanaka on Dec.17.2011.

The legitimacy of Cyborg’s bulky frame has been under questions for years but this is the first time an official testing has confirmed those suspicions.

Along with her suspension, Cris “Cyborg” Santos will face a $2,500 fine and her bout with Hiroko Yamanaka will be retroactively changed to a No Decision (NC). With Santos currently out of the women’s MMA picture, there are early concerns that the Strikeforce 145 lb women’s division may be in big trouble moving forward. With all the best female fighters at 135, and Santos now gone, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the two divisions merged or purged in some fashion in the near future.

As it would happen, the recent confirmation of Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate now makes that contest the biggest match possible in women’s MMA, although that’s a bit of a bittersweet recognition under the circumstances.

The news has once again brought the connection between steroids and professional sports to the limelight.

Barry Larkin, still glowing over his election to the Hall of Fame, was asked about next year’s sure-to-be-controversial vote: the first appearances of Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Sammy Sosa on the Cooperstown ballot.

“All I know is playing and competing against some of these guys, they’re the best — period,” he said.

One of the top competitors in Strikeforce’s light heavyweight division, Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, has tested positive for steroids.

Lawal tested positive for Drostanalone that is a banned steroid, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

A few weeks ago Strikeforce’s Cris Cyborg failed her own steroid test following a 16-second-victory over top contender Hiroko Yamanaka. Cyborg received a one year suspension for her test results, while it’s still unclear what Lawal’s punishment will be.

Both fighters were widely regarded as some of the best talent remaining on the Strikeforce roster, and it makes you wonder how much longer the Zuffa-purchased league can continue forward with these sorts of revelations.

Lawal’s manager Mike Kogan believes the whole thing was a mistake.

Cristiane Justino Santos, 26, the Strikeforce women’s featherweight champion and considered by many as the baddest woman on the planet, tested positive for anabolic steroids the day before her most devastating career win.

According to a release by the California State Athletic Commission, the featherweight champion, better known as “Cyborg,” tested positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol, also known as Winstrol.

The result of the fight held on the Dec. 17 Strikeforce show at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego has been overturned by the commission and ruled a no contest.

“Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters,” CSAC Executive Officer George Dodd said in a press release sent out on Friday.

“Anabolic agents and other banned substances put not only the users of those agents at risk, but their opponents as well. The commission simply will not tolerate their use.”

The test took place on Dec. 16, the day before she knocked out the top contender for the title, Japan’s Hiroko Yamanaka, in just 16 seconds.

Light-heavyweight Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal has been accused of taking a banned substance.

A urine sample provided by Lawal for his Jan. 7 fight in Las Vegas showed the presence of the anabolic steroid drostanlone, the Nevada Athletic Commission said.

Formerly the champion of Strikeforce’s 205-pound division, Lawal was in line for a shot at regaining the belt following his dominance of the previously unbeaten Larkin. After Tuesday’s news broke, Lawal denied trying to cheat with steroids, according to MMAjunkie.com and ESPN.com.

All fighters provide “A” and “B” urine samples during the screening process for bouts in the United States. Lawal will ask that his “B” sample be tested by another lab, said his manager, Mike Kogan.

“Both of us are very surprised by these results,” Kogan told USA TODAY. “Neither of us has ever heard of this drug. … We honestly have no clue where this came from.”

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed Lawal is not expected to file an appeal with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Lawal tested positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone following a Jan. 7, 2012, win over Lorenz Larkin.

Drostanolone, also found in previous drug test results from Josh Barnett and Hermes Franca, is popular among athletes and competitive bodybuilders because its “anti-estrogenic properties make it a very effective cutting agent.”

But “King Mo” insists he “had no intent of taking any illegal substance.”

That’s according to his manager Mike Kogan, who told the MMA Hour (via MMA Fighting) that Lawal ingested “a supplement called S-Mass Lean Gainer by Rock Solid, which Lawal said he bought at a Max Muscle store in California and used only sporadically for ‘rehab stuff.’”

“When I went to Max Muscle, I figured you can’t buy steroids at a Max Muscle. It’s a chain store,” he said. “That’s like going to a grocery store and buying something illegal there. I guess that’s the mistake I made. When I looked at the bottle, it just had a bunch of numbers on it. It had the ingredients. I didn’t see anything that looked illegal on the bottle, to be honest with you,” Lawal said.

David Whitaker posed as an agent for online drug dealers in dozens of recorded phone calls and email exchanges with Google sales executives. This was to spend $200,000 in government money for ads selling narcotics, steroids, and other controlled substances.

A federal prisoner and convicted con artist, Mr. Whitaker, was the lead actor in a government sting targeting Google Inc.

Google acknowledged in the settlement that it had improperly and knowingly assisted online pharmacy advertisers allegedly based in Canada to run advertisements for illicit pharmacy sales targeting U.S. customers.

“We banned the advertising of prescription drugs in the U.S. by Canadian pharmacies some time ago,” the company said in its sole comment on the matter. “However, it’s obvious with hindsight that we shouldn’t have allowed these ads on Google in the first place.”

“There was a part of me that felt bad,” Mr. Whitaker wrote in his account of the undercover operation viewed by The Wall Street Journal. “I had grown to like these people.” But, he said, “I took ease in knowing they…knew it was wrong.”

A federal judge has sentenced a North Alabama satellite technician who admitted to illegally selling anabolic steroids to a Monroe County doctor to 5 months in prison, followed by 3 years’ probation.

Ashley Dewayne Rivers, of Morgan County, was granted by Chief U.S. District Judge William Steele the 50 percent sentencing reduction he likely would have been eligible for had his cooperation efforts paid off as he had tried to help law enforcement investigators pursue other cases.

Rivers pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to illegally dispense anabolic steroids. He admitted to selling the performance-enhancing drugs to Dr. Mark Koch, who faces his own sentencing hearing next month.

Defense attorney James Robinson asked Steele to impose “stringent” probation that would allow his client “no wiggle room” as an alternative to prison. He said Rivers and his wife care for their own 2 adopted children in addition to the 3 children of his disabled brother.

“Mr. Rivers knew when he got into this that there was a risk to this. He never for one minute was misguided into this,” Robinson said. “Ashley knows this is his fault.”

“I don’t think it’s lost on you that this is a serious offense,” Steele said.
