Caisse D’espargne rider Alejandro Valverde has been charged with being involved in Spain’s Operacion Puerto doping scandal, according to the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).
The Spanish rider expressed “surprise and indignation” at being charged for an offence he had not committed.
From in.reuters.com:
The Spanish cycling federation or the International Cycling Union (UCI), the world governing body, would have to bring their own charges for a ban to be worldwide.
UCI president Pat McQuaid told Reuters: “This is for the moment an Italian affair under Italian law…UCI will have to wait until the process finishes to see how we can proceed.”
The CONI statement said: “The CONI prosecutor has charged the Spanish cyclist Valverde. A two-year ban is requested”.
CONI has alleged that blood samples Valverde gave at a doping control when last year’s Tour de France entered Italy for a stage matched DNA from code-named bags of blood discovered in the Spanish Puerto investigation, which was launched in 2006.
Valverde reaffirmed before an Italian anti-doping hearing that he was innocent of any wrongdoings but CONI has now decided to charge the Spaniard.
