An analysis on steroid treatment for sudden hearing loss! When we hear about sudden hearing loss, the most obvious treatment that enters our mind is the steroid treatment which happens to be one of the most common remedies for the same. However research results convey that very few scientific evidences have been found to support this therapy, one of the most prominent being the review and meta analysis addressed in the Archives of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery.

For those of you who are not aware, sudden hearing loss means immense hearing impairment which involves a loss of 30 decibels of hearing over at least three test frequencies within three days. This has been stated in the background text of the article along with the fact that this hearing loss affects five to 20 of every 100,000 individuals per year.

The treatment for the same differs greatly and primarily involves dosage of antiviral medications, vitamins, minerals, herbs, hyperbaric oxygen and agents which help in diluting the blood in the body. Besides, the authors also write that some otolaryngologists choose not to treat sudden sensorineural hearing loss at all as in most cases there are spontaneous recovery rates of up to 32 to 70 percent.

However, in North America the most popular and talked about treatment regarding this sudden sensorineural hearing loss is the intake of systemic steroids. Some authors have also gone to the extent of defining it as the gold standard of treatment for patients suffering from hearing loss.
