Proper Hydration is a must for RunnersThe American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) reiterated its statements on dehydration and Hyponatremia for athletes during endurance competitions with an aim to clarify peculiar issues concerning hydration of athletes.

Hyponatremia is a fatal condition that can happen when athletes take too much intake of water or sports drinks leading to dilution or disruption of sodium levels of the body.

It was pointed out by ACSM Experts in sports medicine and exercise science that hydration is highly important for all active people and water/sports drinks, when consumed as per recommendations, are not fatal for athletes. It was also noted that excessive fluid consumption leading to Hyponatremia is a rare condition that is not found in most athletes.

Larry Kenney, Ph.D., FACSM, referring to the Boston Marathon (18th April), said that most participants appeared to be properly hydrated and have probably received the message of proper hydration for better results.

ACSM Experts said that all active individuals and not just endurance athletes must be mindful of the need of hydration during any kind of activity in the heat and humidity.
