Steroids apparently used in dog fightingWill County Sheriff’s detectives rescued six dogs and five puppies from a southwest suburban home used as a training ground for pit bulls for fighting.

Last November 3, 2009, police found a treadmill and large amounts of steroids and needles at home. The treadmill was used to train fighting dogs, according to the sheriff’s office.

Neighbors called Joliet Animal Control after seeing the dogs tied up in the backyard but nobody seemed to be living in the suburban house for months. A dead dog was also found in the backyard. The search was conducted at 713 Logan St., within Joliet Township.

According to sheriff’s office spokesperson Pat Barry, Detective Sgt. Mike Kelley, Detectives Jack Ellingham and Dan Jungles conducted the preliminary investigation. After obtaining the warrant, they went into the house and found a mother pit bull with five puppies. Four of them were healthy except for one that was sick.

Will County Animal Control, along with Joliet Animal Control, took custody of the dogs. The dogs will undergo check-up, after which, will be sent to area shelters.

According to neighbors, several pick-ups always come and go late at night, although nobody lived in the house for months. Detectives are still investigating if dogfights were actually taking place inside the property.
