Two men who stole anabolic steroids from a health store have received suspended prison terms.

Plymouth magistrates heard that Michael Capeling, aged 24, and 33-year-old Michael Tucker stole four tubs of tablets together worth nearly £250. Both were given 16-week prison sentences suspended for 18 months by the magistrates and asked to perform 200 hours of unpaid work.

For the Crown Prosecution Service, Eoin McCarthy staff were suspicious of the pair in Holland and Barrett at about 1.45pm. The two men admitted theft from Holland and Barrett in the city centre on May 26.

Graham Kinchin, for the pair, said: “This was rather a pathetic attempt at shoplifting. They were always going to be caught. It was pretty much on the spur of the moment.” He added both were “making tremendous progress” under probation supervision in the community after release from jail.

Capeling had finished a catering course and was not misusing drug and Tucker had also kept out of trouble, Mr Kinchin said.
