Preemptive treatment with Panitumumab helps in curbing skin toxicity

Posted By

Preemptive treatment with Panitumumab helps in curbing skin toxicitySome of the skin-associated toxicities that occur in patients receiving panitumumab for treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer may be avoided with a preemptive, prophylactic skin regimen.

This finding was disclosed in data presented at the 2009 American Society of Clinical Oncology Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium in San Francisco.

From News-Medical.Net:

Panitumumab and the other EGFR inhibitors are now key components to the treatment strategies for metastatic colorectal cancer,” Dr. Mitchell said. “But the majority of the patients who receive these agents suffer from skin toxicities, and for some patients, the treatment must be interrupted or discontinued. If we can prevent or minimize these toxicities, it would be a significant advance in patient care.”

The researchers studied 95 patients receiving panitumumab in combination with irinotecan-based chemotherapy. The patients were randomized to receive pre-emptive skin toxicity treatment initiated 24 hours prior to the first dose of panitumumab, then given daily through week six, or reactive skin treatment after the skin toxicity developed. The skin treatment included moisturizers, sunscreen, topical steroids and oral doxycycline.

The primary endpoint was the incidence of specific grade 2 or higher skin toxicities during the six week skin treatment period. The incidence of these toxicities was reduced more than 50% in the group that received pre-emptive treatment.

Quality of life was also assessed, using the Dermatology Life Quality Index. Patients who received the pre-emptive, prophylactic skin treatment regimen reported an improved quality of life, even around week three, which was the median time to first grade 2 or higher skin toxicity in the reactive skin treatment group.

Edith Mitchell, M.D., a clinical professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, presented data from the study, which was co-led by Dr. Mitchell and Mario Lacouture, M.D., an assistant professor of Dermatology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

Rituximab highly effective for providing relief to lupus patients

Posted By

Rituximab highly effective for providing relief to lupus patientsA drug that is presently used for treating cancer may prove additional worth for treating lupus and complications of the central nervous system.

Rheumatologists at the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Vienna, Austria, discovered that Rituximab can be highly effective for treating patients with lupus.

Lupus is a disorder of the immune system in which the body attacks itself resulting in severe pain, diffused body organ damage, and inflammation besides reducing life quality of patients.

From News-Medical.Net:

Professor Neuwelt specialises in diagnosing and treating patients with CNS lupus. “It can be difficult to disentangle psychiatric disorders that arise from other causes,” he states. In a portion of patients, depression, seizures, verbal comprehension, perception and memory will be associated with lupus. People are understandably afraid to admit that their IQ has gone down or that they cannot read any more in fear of losing their job,” he continued. A careful history, ruling out other causes such as infection and drug side effects has improved diagnostic accuracy.

Professor Neuwelt, like others using this well-tested oncological drug in other forms of lupus, is concerned about the depletion of the B cells by rituximab for the long term. However, the risk/benefit ratio from this new treatment in its early stages is extremely promising. “It is the first drug in my 26 years of treating patients with severe central nervous system lupus, used alone or in combination with other therapies that has not only significantly boosted the quality of life for patients with this dreadful disease, but also reduced the burden of side effects of standard treatment with steroids and cyclophosphamide. However, we desperately need randomized-controlled trials.” he concluded.

Clinical professor Michael Neuwelt, at the University of California San Francisco and Stanford University, said that Rituximab is an effective drug that may be recommended as a gentle option for treatment lasting up to six months and with reduced side effect risk.

lisa-rayLisa Ray, an Indian-origin actress who had worked in many successful Bollywood and Hollywood movies, has recently been diagnosed with cancer. It was recently revealed by her in the blog (lisaraniray.wordpress.com) that she is suffering from multiple myeloma but expect to beat the ailment.

She said, “I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma on June 23rd. Started my first cycle of treatment July 2nd. Not long ago.”

Lisa also said that her skin is getting stretched when asked about steroids and life in the wetsuit.

From Lisaraniray.wordpress.com:

In the industry I’m in, you could say, its motive alone that gives character to your acting.

So today with Velcade and, Revlimid and other promising new treatments in the pipeline our survival rates are improving. But only with an ever expanding toolbox of treatments and awareness can this Cancer be beat. So I’m going to do everything I can to wrench the spotlight onto Myeloma and Cancer Awareness.

I believe it can be cured.

That’s the Dirty Realist in me.

So back to the ‘Yellow’ Diaries. And more on ‘Yellow’ and charging your yellow later…

On Steroids: you are HUNGRY ALL THE TIME.

When Dr. Ahmed Galal, my Warrior-Hematologist at Princess Margaret Hospital gave me my first cycle of meds, he capped his recommendation off with a charming gesture that meant: Beware of sweets.

Well. Sweet things aren’t the only temptation.

Every cycle of treatment, I’m on Dexamethasone for four days on, then four days off.

Ever since this news broke down, her fans have been praying for an early recovery so that they can see the most of this actress.

Cancer drug in making may prove effective for Asthma

Cancer drug in making may prove effective for AsthmaA new research by scientists at the University of Edinburgh has suggested that R-roscovitine, a drug presently being tested for treating cancer can help asthmatic patients to a considerable extent.

It was revealed that this drug can help in killing specific immune cells to exacerbate asthma symptoms. This finding is expected to offer an alternative way for treating asthma in steroid-resistant patients.

From Sciencedaily.com:

Professor Adriano Rossi, of the Centre for Inflammation Research at the University of Edinburgh who directed the study, said: “Steroids are commonly used to treat asthma but can have unwanted side-effects, while some asthma patients are also resistant to steroid treatment. It may well be that use of a drug, such as R-Roscovitine, or one that works in a similar same way, could offer an alternative to steroids, or be used in conjunction with steroid treatment for asthma patients.”

The research has been published in the journal FEBS Letters.

It was remarked by the involved researchers that usage of this drug caused the eosinophil cells to undergo a form of cell death known as apoptosis, which is a natural process wherein unwanted cells are removed from the human body.

Rituximab offers a new hope for lupus patients

Rituximab offers a new hope for lupus patientsAccording to rheumatologists at the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Vienna, Austria, Rituximab that is presently used to treat cancer can also prove its worth when it comes to treating patients with lupus and suffering from complications of the central nervous system.

Lupus is a disorder of the immune system in which the human body attacks itself resulting in pain, inflammation, and diffuse damage to many body organs. Medical studies have proved that lupus can dramatically minimize the life quality of patients to add to the misery.

It was remarked by Professor Neuwelt that Rituximab appears to very efficacious and can be described as a gentler form of treatment capable of lasting up to 6 months with a low risk of any side effects.

Natural Medication not always be safe as alternative to Synthetic Medication

Natural Medication not always be safe as alternative to Synthetic MedicationAccording to a research by a Consumer Reports magazine, the common perception that if a medication is natural then it must be safe is not completely true.

The research found that a number of herbal supplements that are banned in Asia and Europe are widely available and used in the United States; these supplements can result in severe side-effects such as kidney or liver damage, cancer, and even death.

From News-Medical.Net:

The consumer publication found a dozen herbal supplements, some banned in Asia, Europe and Canada but widely available in the United States, may cause cancer, kidney or liver damage and even death. Those highlighted include:

Aristolochia, has received attention because of its alleged link to kidney damage and the onset of cancer. This herb was a part of a Chinese herbal compound, used in a weight reduction treatment regimen, in Belgium, in the early 1990s. By 1993, instances of kidney failure were documented in patients who had received treatment.

Yohimbe - which is a tree bark containing a variety of pharmacologically active chemicals. It is marketed in a number of products for body building and “enhanced male performance.” Serious adverse effects, including renal failure, seizures and death, have been reported to FDA with products containing yohimbe and are currently under investigation.

Bitter orange, similar to ephedra, the banned weight-loss supplement believed responsible for 155 deaths nationwide.

The researchers also noted chaparral, comfrey, germander, kava and scullcap, all of which are known or likely causes of liver failure; lobella because of its impact on the heart; and pennyroyal oil because of possible liver, kidney and nerve damage.

The FDA has already sent warning letters to 16 dietary-supplement distributors in this regard along with advising them not to sell the bodybuilding supplement, androstenedione.

In the best interests of prospective users of herbal products and supplements, it is advised not to rely on too-much attractive products without obtaining a clear and complete insight about them and the distributor.
