The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Birmingham’s school of sport and exercise sciences.
It was found during the investigation that the caffeine in sports drinks could increase the absorption of carbohydrates by as much as 26 percent, leading to a sharp advantage for athletes while participating in professional events.
Dr. Asker Jeukendrup, the director of the University’s Human Performance Laboratory, said that if an individual can obtain energy from his or her drinks then he or she is using less energy from the body stores.

Endurance athletes need to emphasize on the need for hydration for delivering dramatic performances on a consistent basis, a fact that was reiterated by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) while presenting its statements on dehydration and Hyponatremia for athletes during endurance competitions.
Hyponatremia is a fatal complication that may happen to any athlete when too much of water or sport drinks are consumed leading to disruption or dilution of sodium levels in the body. Larry Kenney, Ph.D., FACSM, referring to the Boston Marathon (18th April), stated that most marathon participants appeared properly hydrated to him and this hinted that the participants had received the message of proper hydration for attaining best results.
ACSM experts suggested that all active individuals and not just endurance athletes need to emphasize on hydration while being in heat or humidity.
