The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has banned Alberto Contador and stripped him of his victory in the 2010 Tour de France.

Contador tested positive for the stimulant clenbuterol during the 2010 Tour and Andy Schleck of Luxembourg, who finished runner-up by only 39 seconds, will now be the winner of 2010 Tour de France title.

Contador’s suspension was considered to have begun on 25 January 2011, although he had been provisionally banned for the six months before that. He will therefore return on 6 August this year – meaning he would be free to compete in his home Vuelta a España in late August and early September.

Among the races he will miss is the Olympic time trial, which is good news for Britain’s Bradley Wiggins. In total, Contador will lose 12 victories in the races he has ridden since the process started, including last year’s overall win in the Giro d’Italia, plus two stages and the points classification.

Contador’s positive test is dated back to 21 July 2010, when he was tested during the Tour’s rest day in Pau, four days before the Paris finish.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport recently said that a decision over Alberto Contador‘s long-running doping case will be announced next Monday, on February 6.

“The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) intends to publish its decision in the arbitration procedure involving the International Cycling Union (UCI), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Alberto Contador and the Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC) on Monday 6 February 2012,” a CAS statement said.

Three-time winner Contador tested positive for the banned anabolic agent clenbuterol during the 2010 Tour de France and was cleared by the Spanish federation, only for the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to appeal the decision to CAS.

“A confirmation as to the date and time of the publication of the decision will be given by the CAS at the end of this week,” the CAS statement said.

After a positive drugs test in June 2011, Wyberton’s Team GB sprinter Bernice Wilson has failed in her appeal against a four-year suspension.

The 27-year-old broke into the British team last year and competed at the European Indoor Championships and tested positive for two anabolic steroids.

Wilson had blamed a contaminated sample for her positive test for banned steroids testosterone and clenbuterol.

UK Anti-Doping chief Andy Parkinson said: “This sends a strong message to anyone looking to dope in the UK.”

Wilson won the Commonwealth Games 100m trials in 2010 only to miss out on a place in the England squad due to not meeting the qualifying time

She issued a statement in July calling for UK Anti-Doping, who administer drug testing in the UK, to withdraw the case and open an internal investigation to determine the cause of the contamination.

However, an independent National Anti-Doping Panel upheld the European Indoor 60m semi-finalist’s four-year ban.

Parkinson added: “We have successfully argued for a four-year ban which demonstrates that UK Anti-Doping always seeks robust sanctions against athletes who look to cheat the system and betray those around them.”

Bernice Wilson, the British sprinter, has lost an appeal against the sanction imposed following her positive test for two steroids.

The lost appeal means that the four-year ban on her has been confirmed after the 27-year-old from Lincolnshire tested positive for excess levels of testosterone and for clenbuterol on 12 June.

An independent National Anti-Doping Panel handed out a four-year ban against which Wilson appealed, and UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) confirmed on Friday that she had lost her appeal.

UKAD’s chief executive, Andy Parkinson, said: “We have successfully argued for a four-year ban, which demonstrates that UK Anti-Doping always seeks robust sanctions against athletes who look to cheat the system and betray those around them.

“This sends a strong message to anyone looking to dope in the UK and gives clean athletes the confidence that we are working hard on their behalf, within the framework of the World Anti-Doping Code, to protect their right to compete in doping-free sport.”

The National Anti-Doping Panel said Wilson was an “experienced and senior athlete” who saw herself as a role model to younger athletes. “Far from admitting her guilt … she sought to blame other people,” the panel said in its ruling.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has joined the International Cycling Union to appeal against the acquittal of the three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador following his positive test for clenbuterol.

The Spanish Cycling Federation permitted Contador to resume his career.

Wada has now also appealed to the CAS, and a statement from the agency read: “The World Anti-Doping Agency has filed today a declaration to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne against the Spanish Cycling Federation‘s decision in the case of Alberto Contador.

“Mr Contador was acquitted following a positive test for clenbuterol during an in-competition test carried out on July 21, 2010. Following its policy, Wada will refrain from commenting further in order to protect the integrity of the process.”

The UCI challenged decision of the Spanish Cycling Federation and confirmed its appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Cytomel is the market name for Liothyronine sodium and is the L-isomer of triiodothyronine (T3). Alberto Contador, three times Tour de France winner, is not sure if his 2012 season plans will be fulfilled or not.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will decide fate of the cyclist in January 2012.

Contador said, “The main goal is to win the Tour de France. I know it’s very hard. Everybody wants to win, but I will work hard for it. I do not know if I can win or not, but I’ll try. I want to be as well organized as I can possibly be next year and arrive rested and relaxed for the Tour. [This year] I had a good preparation, but next year I want to make it perfect”.

Spanish Cycling Federation cleared the cyclist in February as it accepted that clenbuterol was the result of contaminated beef.

The lab that detected clenbuterol in the sample was equipped with ultra-sensitive machines that can detect even the smallest amount of drug which would otherwise pass the systems, leaving no trace.

The 28-year-old is positive that the court will announce the decision in his favour but wants to get over with the lingering court matters soon.

The cyclist tested positive for Clenbuterol in 2010 but the decision on his case has not been announced as yet.
