  DOMINICAN REPUBLIC FACES STEROIDS ISSUE

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC FACES STEROIDS ISSUEA fertile scouting ground for future baseball pros, Dominican Republic has been dragged into the steroids controversy when former Sen. George Mitchell’s report revealed that human growth hormones have been used illegally in Major League Baseball. The FBI’s investigation produced two Dominicans who were involved in the use of performance enhancing drugs. The most celebrated baseball star is Yankees baseman, Alex Rodriguez who became (in) famous for stepping forward and admitting he used steroids in 2001-2003, now recovering from a hip surgery in Aspen. The other one is Miguel Tejada, starting shortstop for the Houston Astros and 2002 MVP in the American League, who was recently sentenced 100 hours community service and under probation for lying about his knowledge of steroid use of other MLB players.

Dominican baseball commissioner Porfirio Veras said that the country’s reputation is on the line because of the number of Dominicans who are being investigated for steroid use. It would give some people the impression that the country is a breeding ground for roids users.

By giving training, food and housing, the buscones fill in the lack in return for a fraction of the player’s signing bonus once they get into the pros. Buscones have discovered baseball greats like Vladimir Guerrero, Miguel Tejada, David Ortiz and Hanley Ramirez. However, some of these scouts are bad news. They exploit young players of their bonus money taking advantage that they depend on the scouts to provide their needs. Most of the time in desperation to get their wards into the MLB they give the players steroids or performance enhancing drugs. Hopefully when the MLB would begin to implement the sports law this would protect the teens from abusive buscones.

PRESINAL RETREATS FROM LIMELIGHTIn the midst of the outrage over steroid use in the Major League Baseball, Angel Presinal, trainer of baseball stars whom everyone is pointing to as the supplier of the performance enhancing drugs to baseball stars, retreated to his hometown in Dominican Republic. Friends say that he had not been well. His family said that he has lost some weight and recovering from diabetes related sickness.

In 2006, it had been reported that Presinal was nabbed by Canadian authorities for carrying a bag of steroids across the border to Toronto. Since then he had been banned from MLB clubhouses and ballparks. The latest was from the Dominican Republic team who had been forbidden to use Presinal as their trainer for the World Baseball Classics.

Presinal is a respected trainer in the MLB community. Even in his native Dominican Republic he had a good reputation of training the best players both for professional and amateur baseball.

A-Rod Starts Anew with the DominicansAs Alex Rodriguez alighted from the vehicle that took him to the his first batting practice with the Dominicans in Jupiter, Florida, he sported a look that said he was putting the past behind. Clad in red, white, and blue uniform he was starting anew with the Dominican Republic team. He brought along with him his ex-wife Cynthia, Natasha his eldest daughter and 10-month old baby, Ella. Like a scene out of a reality TV show, Rodriguez giving the public a glimpse of his private life.

Fresh from Sunday’s meeting with the Major League Baseball Officials on the steroid scandal, the spotlight remain focused on Rodriguez. So far he is the most interesting player in the World Baseball Classics.

Another personality in the steroids case is Angel Presinal, former trainer of the Dominican Republic Team. He has been banned from working with the team because he allegedly supplied steroids to the players.

The Dominicans did not make a big deal about the issues surrounding Rodriguez’s involvement with steroids. Alex commented that he felt more comfortable playing on the field where he could concentrate on the game and not on the drugs. The team’s goal now goal is to win in the WBC.

a-rod-face-mlb-in-2-hour-meetThe press release from the commissioner’s office described the Yankees star, Alex Rodriguez, as “cooperative” after when he faced the officials from the Major League Baseball Department of Investigations and Labor Relations in Tampa, Florida last Sunday.

An anonymous source revealed that the inquiry was not focused on Rodriguez but about his cousin, Yuri Sucart and Angel Presinal, the Dominican trainer who is being slammed for allegedly supplying the anabolic steroids. It was Sucart who was named to have purportedly injected A-Rod with the drugs. It was not clear, however, if A-Rod was able to provide the information MLB needed for additional leads into their investigation. Nevertheless, according to the source, this should not be a cause for Presinal to believe that he’s off the hook since other players he was associated with are yet to be interviewed. No other details were divulged.

Also present at the meeting were Rodriguez’s lawyers, Jay Reisinger and James E. Sharp. The MLB officials who questioned Rodriguez were Michael Weiner, union general council, Dan Mullin, vice president for investigations, Rob Manfred, executive vice president for labor relations, and Dan Halem, senior vice president and general counsel for labor.

Instead of a career meltdown, A-Rod’s confession of his involvement with PEDs coupled with his decision to shift from the U.S. team to the Dominican team made him a more interesting personality. He didn’t allow the issue to affect his performance on the field. According to Joe Girardi in the NY Daily News, “I think he’s coming through really well…We’re playing games now, which we all know he loves to do, he’s able to free his mind of it for a time.” Girardi also expects the D.R. team to take care of the Yankees superstar as they have supported him during this steroid mayhem.

As the World Baseball Classic looms, A-Rod should expect more attention especially since he decided to join the Dominican Republic team instead of playing for the United States. He will be the force to reckon with in this most anticipated baseball season. The steroid scandal would make him more interesting to spectators around the globe.

A-Rod was described as “cooperative” when he faced MLB officials last Sunday. He continues to focus on his game than dwell on the steroid issues.

The controversial trainer Alex Presinal will not be used by the Dominicans. He worked with them during the World Baseball Classics in 2006.

  BUYING STEROIDS IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

buying-steroids-in-dominican-republicHave you ever wondered how Alex Rodriguez got his hands on his Primobolan? Yes, it was from his then mysterious “cousin” who we now all know is from the Dominican Republic. But wait, isn’t Primobolan a prescription drug in most countries including the United States? Well, Dominican Republic seems to be an exception. While many bodybuilders order online or result to doctor shopping or buying from the black market, bodybuilders in DR can easily get theirs from their local pharmacy. How easily? As easy as buying an over-the-counter drug.

That was from Greg Sarra’s narration of his experience in getting anabolic steroids from a local pharmacy in the Dominican Republic. According to him, aside from Primobolan, there were also Deca Durabolin, Sustanon, Dianabol and testosterone supplies readily available to anyone who would ask for them. While Sarra discarded his purchase after he had made his point, other bodybuilders can easily get their supplies here as well. Interestingly though, the pharmacy does not want to ship to any address in the United States.

  A-ROD’S “COUSIN” IDENTIFIED

a-rods-cousin-identifiedDuring his first media appearance after he had admitted to steroid use, Alex Rodriguez managed to reveal the person who had provided him with the drugs from 2001 to 2003. He mentioned a mysterious “cousin” who was the one providing him with Primobolan and was also the one injecting him with the steroids. This person is Yuri Sucart from Dominican Republic who is also one of Rodriguez’s friends. The identity of Sucart was first revealed in ESPN.com and Carmen Sucart, his wife, confirmed the claim. She said that her husband gave “boli” to the athlete. That was the street name for Primobolan, a highly effective and heavy anabolic steroid.

While some question Rodriguez’s intentions for sharing the blame with Sucart, some are more worried about the issue that anabolic steroids might have been smuggled from the Dominican Republic to the United States. If this were the case, it would prove to be a bigger scandal for both Rodriguez and Sucart. Fortunately, Primobolan and other performance enhancing drugs are rather easy to acquire in the Southern country and DEA agents don’t plan on prosecuting either Rodriguez or Sucart for this issue or for the issue of using anabolic steroids.
