Defense figures have revealed that more than 40 soldiers, sailors, and airmen were sacked for taking drugs in 2010-11.
Though cannabis was the most popular drug, positive tests for ecstasy, steroids, cocaine, and amphetamines were also returned.
“The rate of positive tests in the Australian Defence Force is significantly lower than in the general Australian community, and has fallen by around 80 per cent since the testing regime was introduced,” a spokesman for Defense Personnel Minister Warren Snowdon said.

Tommy Conlon Pieter de Villiers accidentally ended up with a cocktail of cocaine and ecstasy coursing through his bloodstream after he and his Stade Francais team mates went out for a feed of drink after beating Harlequins.
The South African-born French rugby player is now facing a ban of two years after a random test on December 18 picked up traces of the drugs.
If his statement is any thing to believe, Pieter de Villiers probably had received an unfair deal.

Professor David Nutt, former government drugs adviser and brain chemistry pundit, has been all alone in the quest to bring an abrupt end to drugs hypocrisy of Britain but his efforts have been overshadowed by the civil servants.
The sacking of Nutt last year by the then home secretary, Alan Johnson, was a disgrace that disqualified Johnson from high office.
The offence of Nutt was to protest, mildly, in an academic lecture, at the political second-guessing of his official committee on drug classification.
