Pharmacists can considerably bring down worriesPharmacists could significantly reduce worries and doubts of patients as far as the use of steroids is concerned. The advice of pharmacists can ease down worries by as much as 50 percent, as per a new research launched at the British Pharmaceutical Conference in Manchester.

The study was conducted by Pharmacy Alliance, the Medicines Management Division of UniChem in collaboration with general physicians, examined the contribution of community pharmacists in addressing the needs of patients afflicted with atomic eczema.

Pharmacist Caroline Tinkler who led the study remarked that patients must be appropriately educated about eczema and the available treatment options.

Discovery of eczema creams labeled as ‘herbal’ actually contained steroids was prompted by a call from the scientists for stringent regulations.

The scientists found varying concentrations of steroid drugs in 20 out of 24 tested creams.

Over-prescribed steroids common in children with allergiesA warning was recently issued to parents and healthcare professionals by drug experts in context to the fact that children with allergic conditions such as asthma and hayfever are being over-prescribed corticosteroids.

This warning was a result of research unveiled at the British Pharmaceutical Conference (BPC) in Manchester that disclosed that many children suffering from multiple allergic conditions such as asthma, eczema, and hayfever may be exposed to high doses of corticosteroids via co-prescribing of steroid preparations for varying conditions.

Lead researcher Dr James McLay, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at Aberdeen University, said the research highlighted that many children are prescribed more than single corticosteroid preparation for an allergic condition.

This study, which was undertaken by Pharmacy Alliance, the Medicines Management Division of UniChem, investigated the contribution of community pharmacists in meeting the needs of patients with atomic eczema, in collaboration with general physicians.

It is considered that advice of a pharmacist can relieve worries of patients who are about to use topical corticosteroids, to a great extent.
