Anderson Silva, Brazilian mixed martial artist and former UFC Middleweight Champion, has failed an out-of-competition drug test. The UFC legend, however, denied using anabolic steroids.

The 39-year-old had tested positive for the steroid Drostanolone during a random out-of-competition test administered by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. NSAC chairman Francisco Aguilar confirmed the positive test and said Silva’s lab report revealed that he also tested positive for a second steroid, Androstane. Aguilar also disclosed that Diaz (26-10) tested positive for marijuana metabolites during a post-fight drug test. Silva (34-6) defeated Diaz via unanimous decision at UFC 183 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Marcio Tannure, the medical director of Brazil’s governing body for mixed martial arts, remarked Anderson Silva denies using steroids. The laboratory that conducted the tests is now performing further evaluation of Silva’s samples.

Silva believes there was “contamination” or a “mistake by the laboratory” that handled his test. Silva said in a statement released by Ed Soares, his manager, said he has been competing in this sport for a very long time and this was his 19th fight in the UFC. Silva added he had been thoroughly tested many times and have never had a positive test. He also denied using performance enhancing drugs and said his stance on drugs is and will always be the same as he is an advocate for a clean sport.

According to an announcement by UFC, the former middleweight champion tested positive in an out-of-competition test on January 9. This announcement was made just a few days after Anderson Silva defeated Nick Diaz in Las Vegas in his return to the cage after recovering from a broken lower left leg 13 months ago.

In a statement, UFC President Dana White said Silva for now would continue in his role as a coach for “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil,” and added that UFC will wait for the investigative process before taking a decision. White added Anderson Silva has been one of the greatest athletes this sport has ever seen and added Silva has had a long and distinguished career in mixed martial arts. The UFC President went on to remark that Anderson has never tested positive for a banned substance in his nine years with the UFC and we want to ensure that Anderson gets his due process and we will support him during this time.

Silva faces a disciplinary hearing in Las Vegas on February 17, when his license to fight is likely to be suspended. He may face a nine-month suspension. On the other hand, Diaz may be face a heavier suspension and fine as this is his third doping offence.

Former middleweight and light heavyweight contender Chael Sonnen said he believes the entire career of Silva is fair game to question. Sonnen himself received suspension after he failed two separate random drug tests for a ‘cocktail’ that included human growth hormone (HGH), recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Sonnen remarked as soon as you test positive for something people will want to say it was over your whole career and he believes that is fair and added if you get hit with something it runs you all the way back in time.

Improved Abilities Discovered For Detecting HCG Doping In Sport

A new peer-reviewed research conducted by Getachew A. Woldemariam and Dr. Anthony W. Butch may place a vital role in the day to come for detecting athletes who are taking human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to enhance athletic performance.

Woldemariam and Butch through their research developed ways to specifically measure several forms of hCG in urine. In females, urinary human chorionic gonadotropin is a marker of pregnancy. The new test, by specifically measuring the various forms of hCG in male urine, can better detect athletes who are taking hCG.

Butch remarked this immunoextraction and tandem mass spectrometry method for measuring the major isoforms of chorionic gonadotropin in urine is a significant improvement over currently available immunoassays. Dr. Butch further added that the method has superior analytical specificity and will greatly enhance the ability to detect male athletes who dope with various forms of chorionic gonadotropin.

Dr. Larry Bowers, PCC Scientific Advisory Board Chair and USADA Chief Science Officer, commented that the measurement of male urinary hCG in anti-doping has been an area of concern for many years. Dr. Bowers added this important research has not only developed a sensitive and specific LC-MS/MS assay which will help us to detect the various forms of hCG and those who use it to cheat their competitors, but Woldemariam and Butch have greatly added to our knowledge about hCG excretion after administration. It was further remarked by Bowers that with the specificity of the LC-MS/MS method, it should be possible to provide additional information about the concentration of intact hCG in male urine samples who have not doped and therefore increase the sensitivity of the test.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), based on the study results, is in the process of developing new guidelines for WADA-accredited labs for conducting tests.

Human chorionic gonadotropin has the ability to stimulate production of Testosterone in the body and is presently classified as a banned substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency list. It is commonly used by athletes and bodybuilders with synthetic anabolic steroids. Medical practitioners recommend this hormone to young boys when their testicles have not dropped down into the scrotum (due to a pituitary gland disorder) in a normal way. Use of HCG is commonly made by athletes and bodybuilders during a steroid cycle to maintain testosterone production and testicle size. Bioavailability of the HCG injection is better with intravenous administration than with subcutaneous administration.

In the last few years, HCG has been marketed for weight loss and it is believed that it can improve mood, assist in fat burning, and reduce hunger. Many elite bodybuilders have successfully used HCG to get rid of stubborn fat and fat accumulated in the abdomen and the thighs without compromising on muscle mass. HCG abuse can result in health complications such as breast enlargement in women, sudden development of facial or pubic hair in adolescents, indigestion, difficulty in breathing, rapid weight or height gain, bloating, and nausea.

The research, which was published in the August issue of Clinical Chemistry, was funded by the Partnership for Clean Competition (PCC).

Rodriguez Won 2007 MVP After Testosterone Exemption

According to a new book, Major League Baseball officials allowed New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez to make use of Testosterone during his 2007 MVP season.

The book, Blood Sport: Alex Rodriguez, Biogenesis and the Quest to End Baseball’s Steroid Era by Tim Elfrink and Gus Garcia-Roberts revealed that Alex Rodriguez was one of two players that season who were granted therapeutic use exemptions (TUE) for androgen deficiency medications. It was further revealed that exemption to A-Rod was given two days before the start of spring training. According to the book excerpt, Major League Baseball entered into evidence several exemptions that were requested by Rodriguez since he joined the Yankees. It is surely a huge surprise for many as MLB chief operating officer Rob Manfred called Testosterone “the mother of all anabolics” and remarked that testosterone exemptions are very rare as some people who have been involved in this field feel that with a young male, healthy young male, the most likely cause of low testosterone requiring this type of therapy would be prior steroid abuse.

Rodriguez hit a major-league leading 54 homers with 156 RBI during the 2007 season. The baseball star was recently suspended from baseball for using banned performance enhancing drugs that he purchased from the now-defunct Biogenesis Clinic.

A-Rod also applied for two other exemptions in 2008. According to the book, A-Rod, the American professional baseball third baseman for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball, was given permission to use Clomid that is prescribed to men diagnosed with hypogonadism and may also be used to prevent the formation of excess estrogens associated with the use of harsh and aromatizable steroids. MLB however denied him permission to use Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) that is used for weight loss while also producing Testosterone.

In a statement, MLB said all decisions regarding whether a player shall receive a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) under the Joint Drug Program are made by the Independent Program Administrator (IPA) in consultation with outside medical experts, with no input by either the Office of the Commissioner or the Players Association. It was added that the process is confidentially administered by the IPA, and MLB and the MLBPA are not even made aware of which players applied for TUEs and the TUE process under the Joint Drug Program is comparable to the process under the World Anti-Doping Code.

The MLB officials also added that the standard for receiving a TUE for a medication listed as a performance-enhancing substance is stringent, with only a few such TUEs being issued each year by the IPA. It also revealed that MLB and the MLBPA annually review the TUE process to make sure it meets the most up-to-date standards for the issuance of therapeutic use exemptions. MLB officials also remarked MLB and the MLBPA have publicly issued the IPA’s annual report as recommended by the Mitchell Report since 2008 about which documents how many TUEs were granted for each category of medication and further added that we believe this high level of transparency helps to ensure the proper operation of the TUE process.

Dennis Siver Tests Positive For hCG

Dennis D. Siver, the Russian-German mixed martial artist who competes in the featherweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), has tested positive for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).

The naturally-occurring hormone in both males and females is on the banned substances’ list of many sports due to frequency in use with anabolic androgenic steroids. HCG is commonly used by male athletes and bodybuilders to boost testosterone production and may also be used to lose weight. It is used as a fertility drug by women.

According to a confirmation by Nevada State Athletic Commission chairman Francisco Aguilar, an “appropriate complaint” against the mixed martial artist was being prepared. It is believed Siver may serve a temporary suspension and will have the opportunity to make an appeal against the suspension. However, he may face a full suspension, a fine, and a potential overturning of his win over Manny Gamburyan at UFC 168 on December 28 in Las Vegas to a no-contest.

In a statement, Dennis Siver accepted for responsibility, but was adamant that it was not an effort on his part to knowingly dope for the fight. Siver said he would like to issue a public statement and give his fans and supporters the opportunity to form their own opinion on how the alleged doping allegations against me came about. He added he hired an external personal trainer and nutritionist before UFC 168 and the nutritionist recommended a new diet method from the US to him, which had been successfully used by the stars. Siver added he confirmed from the nutritionist if he could safely use this supplement and it was confirmed to him but he made the mistake of not making sure through the UFC if individual substances from the supplement could have effects on the drug tests. In the statement, Siver said the B sample revealed a small component of hCG in his urine sample – a minor ingredient of the diet preparation and a substance which is banned in the UFC.

Siver added he doesn’t want to blame anyone for this result and he takes full responsibility for his gullible and careless behavior. He also remarked it was his mistake and it was grossly negligent and he further remarked that he had distance himself from any kind of doping and added in his previous sixteen UFC fights, not even the smallest banned substance has been detected. Siver said this makes the current events all the more disappointing and shocking for him and his team.

Siver is #7 in official Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight rankings. He started training in martial arts in 1994 when he started learning sambo, judo, kickboxing, and taekwondo. Dennis Siver became the WAKO amateur kickboxing champion of Germany in 1997 and was signed by the UFC after his win against Jim Wallhead at CWFC – Enter The Rough House. His victory against Nate Mohr at UFC 93 in Dublin was awarded the Knockout of the Night award where he managed to TKO his opponent via a spinning back kick and punches.

Florida Clinic Sued By MLB For Doping Players

On Friday, Major League Baseball has sued a now-shuttered South Florida clinic and its operators and accused them of scheming to offer banned performance enhancing drugs to its players in violation of their MLB contracts.

Unspecified damages from Coral Gables anti-aging clinic Biogenesis of America and its operator, Anthony Bosch, were sought by the lawsuit in Miami-Dade Circuit Court. The lawsuit also named several other associates of Bosch, who is believed to be out of the country. It was contended by the Major League Baseball that the operators of the clinic solicited players to make use of banned drugs knowing that such use would violate their contracts, specifically the drug prevention and treatment program that became effective in 2003 and is a part of baseball’s collective bargaining agreement with the players, includes a list of banned substances and lays out penalties for violations and imposes testing requirements.

It was also contended by the lawsuit that former star Manny Ramirez, who is now signed to play for a team in Taiwan, obtained a prohibited substance from Bosch in 2009 that ultimately resulted in a suspension of 50 games for Ramirez by MLB when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which marks the first time that the MLB has gone on the record saying Ramirez tested positive for the female fertility drug HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin.

According to the lawsuit, the elements of the scheme included the use of fake or partial names on drug packages sent to players, visits to players at home or at hotels to personally administer the banned substances and claims made to the players that if used properly the drugs “would not result in a positive test” under the MLB drug program. The lawsuit said testosterone, human growth hormone, and human chorionic gonadotropin were among the banned drugs supplied and MLB players were told that the drugs would increase their strength and help them recover from injuries more quickly.

Attorneys Allen Weitzman and Matthew Menchel wrote in the complaint that MLB has suffered “costs of investigation, loss of goodwill, loss of revenue and profits and injury to its reputation, image, strategic advantage and fan relationships,” because of the alleged conspiracy. The lawsuit may offer a way for the Major League Baseball to more deeply investigate Biogenesis and Bosch through depositions of witnesses and subpoenas to obtain documents, although it seeks money damages. The MLB was rebuffed in an effort to get access to clinical records from the alternative Miami New Times newspaper, which has published detailed accounts of the alleged player drug use. The newspaper implicated New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, outfielder Melky Cabrera of the Toronto Blue Jays, Washington pitcher Gio Gonzalez, Oakland pitcher Bartolo Colon, Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz, and San Diego catcher Yasmani Grandal though most of them denied a link with Biogenesis. In the past, Rodriguez has admitted to using performance enhancing drugs and Colon, Cabrera, and Grandal were each suspended for 50 games last year for testing positive for elevated testosterone levels.
