More oversight of dietary products urged by studyAccording to a government audit, more than half of all adults in the United States, or at least 14 million people, make use of dietary supplements like herbs, diet pills, vitamin pills, and energy drinks.

But the FDA doesn’t have enough control to ensure that these products are safe and more oversight power is required to put things in the right place.

The new report from the Federal Government Accountability Office acknowledged that the FDA had indeed taken some steps in the past few years for supervising the supplement industry more closely, but those steps didn’t go far enough.

Steroid treatment for sudden hearing loss analyzedDespite the fact that steroids are considered and prescribed as the most used treatment for sudden hearing loss, there is little of scientific evidence to suggest their use or that of any other therapies for this condition, as per a systematic review and meta-analysis both published in the June issue of Archives of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery.

All randomized clinical trials that were published between 1966 and 2006 and evaluated treatments for sudden hearing loss were searched by Anne Elizabeth Conlin, B.A. & Sc., M.D., of the University of Ottawa, Ontario, and Lorne S. Parnes, M.D., F.R.C.S.C., of the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada.

It was concluded that systemic steroids cannot be considered the gold standard of treatment for treating sudden sensorineural hearing loss, given the severe limitations of the landmark study supporting their use.
