Jaimie Thomas banned for four games

Posted By

The NFL has suspended Colts guard Jaimie Thomas for four games after he was found violating the anabolic steroids and related substances policy.

The league and the Colts did not say what prohibited substance he tested positive for.

From Espn.go.com:

Thomas was a seventh-round selection by the Colts in the 2009 draft and played in eight games with Indianapolis in 2010. He was placed on IR on Aug. 19 this year with a back injury.

Also Wednesday, the Colts placed defensive tackle Eric Foster and rookie offensive tackle Ben Ijalana on injured reserve, ending their seasons.

Foster dislocated his right ankle in a gruesome scene during Monday night’s loss at Tampa Bay.

“Practice will go along this week and we’ll see where we are. We do have a lot of possibilities and some of them are too endless to go through,” coach Jim Caldwell said Wednesday. “It’s just the way it is. You take a look at where you are and adjust accordingly.”

Hall of Fame quarterback admits to steroid use

Posted By

In a radio interview, Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw admitted to using steroids during his playing days.

“We did steroids to get away the aches and the speed of healing,” Bradshaw said.

From Espnstar.com:

“My use of steroids from a doctor was to speed up injury, and (I) thought nothing of it. It was to speed up the healing process, that was it. It wasn’t to get bigger and stronger and faster.”

The No. 1 overall pick in the draft in 1970, Bradshaw also said he took the steroids with a doctor’s prescription. Steroids were not illegal when Bradshaw played.

Now a television studio analyst for FOX, Bradshaw played for the Steelers from 1970-83. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989 – in his first year of eligibility.

Bradshaw twice was the Most Valuable Player in the Super Bowl and also was the NFL MVP in 1978.

The Hall of Fame quarterback said on the Dan Patrick Show that he only used steroids for helping him deal with injuries.

  NFL introduces game-day testing

Posted By

NFL introduces game-day testingAdolpho Birch, the NFL‘s senior vice president of law and labor policy, recently said the league will drug test for steroids on game days.

NFL will use the game-day testing only for performance-enhancers and not for recreational drugs like cocaine and marijuana.

From Torontosun.com:

The new 10-year CBA that was hammered out during the NFL’s more than four- month lockout includes blood testing for human growth hormone, the first such test in any of the country’s major sports.

Details are still being hashed out, but Birch said the program is all but finalized at this point.

“The framework of the testing procedures, I think both sides would agree, is largely agreed to and I don’t expect that there will be much more need to discuss those,” he said.

As for game-day testing, Birch said the NFL has avoided it in the past because of the logistics involved.

“But we have now developed a solution that will allow us to do game-day testing in a way that is not overly disruptive to the clubs and respects the game-day process and all of the things going on,” he said.

“This is primarily a competitive issue, so we do not contemplate utilizing it for the substances-of-abuse recreational drugs,” Birch said during a conference call. “But it is something that will involve any of the potential testing we do under the steroid policy.”

  Game-day tests not disruptive

Posted By

Game-day tests not disruptiveAdolpho Birch, who oversees the NFL’s drug-testing program, recently said that he was confident that game-day testing that can take place before or after games would not be disruptive to teams.

With this statement, Birch has provided a solution for a concern among players and coaches.

From NYtimes.com:

Birch said he did not believe H.G.H. is used by 10 to 20 percent of players, as some players have publicly guessed.

He declined to reveal if discussions with the players union had already begun to resolve the final details of growth hormone testing. But he played down concerns about the reliability of tests — concerns that players raised the day before the deal was completed last week — and he said that the N.F.L. hoped eventually to have a test that will expand the detection window for H.G.H.

Game-day testing would be limited to performance enhancing drugs like steroids and human growth hormone, and would not include recreational drugs, like marijuana and cocaine.

Kevin Vickerson handed over drug banAccording to a report by The Tennessean, Tennessee Titans reserve defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson has been suspended for four games without pay.

The ban was imposed after Vickerson was found violating the NFL‘s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances.

From Espnstar.com:

“It was kind of a rough situation for Kevin, the timing and everything,” Vickerson’s agent Tony Fleming told The Tennessean.

“He completely feels like he was innocent and didn’t do anything wrong. But for the benefit of the team and the situation, he wanted to get it out of the way and get ready for the Super Bowl run.”

Vickerson was placed on the team’s suspended list, leaving its roster at 52 players. The Titans are not expected to add a player prior to Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, the newspaper reported.

League sources told the newspaper that Vickerson tested positive for the banned diuretic Bumetanide.

  NFL Commissioner wants HGH testing

Posted By

NFL Commissioner wants HGH testingThe National Football League (NFL) will be insisting on a mandatory Human Growth Hormone (HGH) testing in the next labor deal with the players, according to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The NFL Commissioner said the NFL needs to do more to ensure that banned substances are kept out of the sport.

From Playerpress.com:

HGH is a protein-based peptide hormone that stimulates growth, cell reproduction and regeneration in humans and other animals which affects the growth hormone on the tissues of the body and is described as an anabolic just as steroids are.

It is used by athletes in an attempt to enhance their athletic performance although recent studies have not been able to support claims that HGH actually improves athletic performance.

In the United States, HGH is only available legally with a prescription from a doctor.

The use of HGH by NFL players is prohibited by the league, but they do not currently test for it.

  Steve Gregory suspended by NFL

Posted By

Steve Gregory suspended by NFLThe NFL has suspended San Diego Chargers strong safety Steve Gregory for four games without pay.

Gregory was suspended for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

From Signonsandiego.com:

Gregory said in a statement released by the Chargers that he appealed the suspension, and was denied. The suspension was announced a day after he intercepted Derek Anderson in a 41-10 win against the Arizona Cardinals that pulled the Chargers to 2-2.

“I was completely shocked to find out about this positive test from May during the offseason,” Gregory said in a statement. “I have never knowingly used any form of performance enhancing substance. However, as an athlete I know that I am responsible for everything that goes into my body. I appealed these test results, and through this process I was disappointed to learn today that I am going to be suspended for the next four games.

“It is tremendously upsetting to me, but I fully respect and support the NFL‘s policies. I will take this as a learning experience and come back stronger and as committed as ever. I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the organization, fans, and my family and friends. I look forward to moving past this and helping my team win a championship this year.”

The substance the player tested positive for was not revealed by the NFL as well as Gregory.

Steroids is an issue in NFLThe NFL has had a “rash” of positive tests under its policy about anabolic steroids and related substances, according to Fox 31.

The station reported, while citing a “highly-placed NFL source”, said there have been as many as 10 positive tests.

From Espnstar.com:

Fox 31 reported Friday the NFL has had a “rash” of positive tests under the league’s policy regarding anabolic steroids and related substances.

Citing a “highly-placed NFL source,” the station reported that there have been as many as 10 positive tests, resulting from players taking water pills in an effort to lose weight.

The NFL could not be reached for comment.

The report said among the players with positive tests were running back Deuce McAllister and defensive end Will Smith of the New Orleans Saints.

The substance in question is Bumetanide, a drug which can mask the presence of other substances, including steroids.

A first violation results in a four-game suspension under policy of the league for anabolic steroids and related substances.
