The largest amounts of steroids in the history of City Police were recently confiscated while investigating an “international drug smuggling operation.”

Leslie E. Parker Jr., of Murfreesboro was arrested by Murfreesboro Police VICE officers, with the help of agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, according to a news release from Murfreesboro Police.

Parker was arrested after a “long-term investigation” revealed he was receiving and distributing large quantities of steroids, according to police.

“Investigators believe the illegal drugs were being shipped from China to JFK International Airport, and then mailed to Parker locally,” said MPD spokesman Kyle Evans, via the press release. “Using the U.S. Postal Service, he distributed the drugs to mid-level dealers, both locally and throughout the entire country to be sold to individual users.”

“This represents one of the largest steroid confiscations in department history,” Evans said.

In connection with a mail fraud case, Axis Laboratories LLC was sentenced to one-year probation, penalized $50,000, and asked to surrender $107,000.

The company was charged by government prosecutors of disseminating anabolic steroids disguised as a weight-loss dietary supplement.

After testing positive for a steroid, Strikeforce star Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will lose her 145-pound women’s title.

Drug tests related to a Dec. 17 championship bout with Hiroko Yamanaka revealed the presence of stanozolol metabolites in the urine sample provided by Santos, according to the California State Athletic Commission.

“Strikeforce has not seen the test results regarding Ms. Santos. However, we have a consistent and strong stance against any use of performance-enhancing drugs. We also have a long history of supporting effective drug testing of athletes by authorized regulatory bodies.

“Therefore, we will closely monitor the matter and will work with the California State Athletic Commission regarding any information we may be asked to provide. We also recognize that Ms. Santos has administrative process rights under California law and we hope that she is not prejudged before she has the opportunity to exercise such rights.”

Result of the test means a $2,500 fine and a suspension of Santos’ license to fight in California.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is reviewing epidural injections of steroids for treating back and neck pain, according to a report by Bloomberg.

This was after Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) issued a warning seven months ago that administering its Kenalog steroid around the spine could cause serious complications.

Bristol-Myers in New York revised its label for Kenalog to say it is not recommended for injection into the epidural space near the spine because of “reports of serious medical events, including death,” associated with administering steroids that way, the article said. But the drugmaker and the FDA have not yet publicized the label change, Bloomberg said.

Bristol-Myers’ steroid Kenalog and the Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) drug Depo-Medrol are the most commonly used steroids for epidural injections, Bloomberg said.

Bohdan Ulihrach, in an interview with a Czech newspaper, said a test during a tournament in Moscow showed unacceptable levels of norandrosterone, a metabolite of the banned steroid.

The urine test indicated 5.2 nanograms per milliliter, fractionally over the 5.0 limit.

Ulihrach’s decision to go public about his test is slightly puzzling given that, under Association of Tennis Professionals rules, his name would not have been released for at least another three weeks and then only if the second or B sample also came up positive.

The 27-year-old is awaiting the result of that before deciding whether to appeal. Should the B sample also yield a positive result he could be banned for two years.

His test was carried out under the auspices of the ATP, which has committed to increasing the number of tests players have to undergo both in and out of competition. Last year it tested 880 players during tournaments but only 70 out of competition. The ATP aims to increase in-competition testing by 20% this year and double the rate out of competition.

Ulihrach has been world-ranked as high as No 22.
