The Bitter Truth About A-Rod

For days, the public has been waiting for some sort of enlightenment from Alex Rodriguez and his camp. There were those who wanted him to admit having used steroids, unlike Bonds and Clemens who are still firmly denying using these drugs. Well, their prayers seem to have been answered. A-Rod has released his statement today, admitting that he had used performance enhancing drugs when he was still part of the Texas Rangers back in 2001 to 2003. He adds, however, that he didn’t know what type of steroid he was taking specifically. Now the public is wondering if A-Rod is just another baseball fraud who had become a superstar from some artificial means.

From The New York Times:

The admission also makes Rodriguez, who joined the Yankees in 2004 and has 553 career home runs, the most prominent baseball player to admit that he has knowingly used illegal substances. Three other equally famous players — Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Mark McGwire — are widely suspected of having used performance enhancers, and have become infamous for their denials. Rodriguez took the blame in a lengthy interview on ESPN.

“When I arrived at Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure,” Rodriguez told the interviewer, Peter Gammons. “I felt like I had all the weight of the world on top of me and I needed to perform, and perform at a high level every day.

“Back then it was a different culture. It was very loose. I was young. I was stupid. I was naïve. And I wanted to prove to everyone that I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time. I did take a banned substance, and for that I am very sorry and deeply regretful.”

A-Rod said that he has not used any anabolic steroids or performance enhancing drugs since transferring to the New York Yankees. After 2003, he admitted to have contemplated on the effects of using these drugs. He said that he realized that it would tarnish his career and that it would disappoint millions of baseball fans that have supported him ever since. Sadly, this is what is happening to A-Rod now.
