Oral Steroids Relieve Morning Sickness Among Pregnant WomenA small study reported that nausea and vomiting during pregnancy responded faster, more completely, and at a lower cost with oral methylprednisolone (Solumedrol). In the clinical study conducted by Dr. Joanna Adamczak, within three days of starting therapy, patients had significantly fewer episodes of nausea and vomiting with methylprednisolone compared with promethazine.

To compare the two therapies, the team of Dr. Adamczak enrolled 110 patients with nausea and vomiting of pregnancy in a randomized clinical trial. All the patients had normal-appearing singleton intrauterine pregnancies and an estimated gestational age of eight to 14 weeks, as determined by ultrasound.

At the end of the study, patients who had methylprednisolone did not have any complaint about the medication, while those who had promethazine expressed displeasure with the suppository formulation.
