Rugby Player Banned Again By UK Anti-Doping

Ross Bevan, who was registered with South Wales Scorpions, now known as South Wales Ironmen, has been banned again by the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) following a second Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV).

Originally, Bevan was banned after testing positive for Drostanolone, the anabolic androgenic steroid and a metabolite of Drostanolone following an out-of-competition squad test on 9 February 2015. A UKAD Doping Control Officer attempted to collect a sample from Bevan at his home address on 28 September 2016. The rugby player refused to provide a sample and was subsequently charged with an ADRV pursuant to Article 2.3 of the World Anti-Doping Code – “Evading, Refusing, or Failing to Submit to Sample Collection”.

Later, Bevan admitted the charge but sought a reduction in the period of ineligibility under Article 10.6.3 of the World Anti-Doping Code – “Prompt Admission of an ADRV”. The reduction was agreed with WADA and sanction of the player was subsequently reduced by a period of nine months. Bevan appealed the decision but it as rejected by an independent National Anti-Doping Panel and the rugby player was subsequently banned for seven years and three months.

UKAD’s Director of Operations, Pat Myhill said any athlete who is currently banned remains subject to testing in order to limit the chances of them continuing to use performance enhancing substances whilst banned and then returning to sport. Myhill added it is therefore of vital importance that they make themselves available to us when called upon. The UKAD’s Director of Operation also commented that the refusal by Bevan to submit to sample collection whilst already serving a period of ineligibility is not only a second serious breach of the Anti-Doping Rules but also his core responsibilities as an athlete. We treat violations such as this with the utmost seriousness and would implore athletes of all levels to comply or potentially face a lengthy ban from all sport.

Bevan is banned from 14 October 2016 until midnight on 14 January 2024. He was previously banned from all competition from 26 February 2015 until midnight on 25 February 2017. At that time, UKAD’s Director of Legal, Graham Arthur had remarked this case is unusual in that Bevan has received a two year ban because of the unique circumstances surrounding the timing of his admitted use of steroids. Arthur had also commented that although Bevan was bound by the Anti-Doping Rules (ADR) of the Rugby Football League at the time of his test in February 2015, the independent National Anti-Doping Panel concluded that because he used the steroids in 2014, he did not intend to breach the 2015 Rule and added he did not therefore have to serve a four year ban. The UKAD’s Director of Legal had also commented that whilst Bevan is not deemed to have acted intentionally under the 2015 rules, it is very clear that he was at significant fault. Arthur  added UKAD takes the use of steroids in sport extremely seriously and also said our mission is to protect the right to participate in clean sport in this country and steroids have absolutely no place in sport.

Rafael Palmeiro Signs Contract With Sugar Land Skeeters

Disgraced slugger Rafael Palmeiro has signed a contract with independent Sugar Land Skeeters that will make the twenty-year MLB veteran play final three games of the season alongside son Patrick, an infielder with the Texas club.

Rafael Palmeiro, who has not played professional baseball in more than a decade, signed the contact with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League, an eight-team association outside Major League Baseball’s traditional farm system. In a release issued by the club, the 50-year-old Palmeiro said we discussed me playing earlier this year and it is something that he has looked forward to since then. Rafael added the chance to play with his son is an opportunity the Skeeters have offered me and he is very excited to make it happen this weekend.

The return of Palmeiro comes a decade after an illustrious major league career that was all set for the Hall of Fame until a positive test for Stanozolol (Winstrol), an anabolic steroid, was revealed just five months after Rafael Palmeiro emphatically denied under oath of ever using performance enhancing drugs. Rafael continues to maintain he never made use of anabolic steroids intentionally.

A four-time All-Star who played 20 major league seasons with the Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles, Palmeiro retired with 569 home runs and 3,020 hits that made him one of only five players in the history of Major League Baseball to be a member of both the 500-home run and 3,000-hit clubs — Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, and Alex Rodriguez are the others.

This is not the first time the minor-league club based in Sugar Land has made headlines with an unusual signing. In 2012, a pair of starts for the Skeeters was made by Roger Clemens, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner named 82 times in the Mitchell Report on steroid use in baseball, when he was 50 years old. Last year, seven-time NBA All-Star Tracy McGrady made the opening day roster of the Skeeters as a pitcher. McGrady made four appearances, allowing four hits and five runs while recording a 6.75 ERA in 6 2/3 innings.

The retired Cuban American Major League Baseball first baseman and left fielder played for the Cubs (1986–1988), Texas Rangers (1989–1993, 1999–2003), and the Baltimore Orioles (1994–1998, 2004–2005). Rafael was named to the MLB All-Star Team four times and also has the distinction of winning the Gold Glove three times. Palmeiro was a part of 2,831 major league games, which is the most by any player who never participated in the World Series. Palmeiro was identified as a fellow steroid user by former Rangers teammate José Canseco in his 2005 book, Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big. Canseco claimed he personally injected Rafael Palmeiro with anabolic androgenic steroids. Palmeiro appeared at a Congressional hearing on March 17, 2005 about steroids in baseball and denied ever using steroids while under oath. Palmeiro was suspended for ten days on August 1, 2005 after he tested positive for an anabolic steroid.

Second Latvian Hockey Player Failed Anti-Doping Test

The Latvian men’s hockey team, which reached the quarterfinals before falling 2-1 to Canada during the Sochi Games, has been embarrassed again. This was after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) reported that Latvia’s Ralfs Freibergs, a defenseman who played in five games, had his A and B samples test positive for an anabolic androgenic steroid.

Freibergs was tested immediately after the elimination of Latvia by Canada on February 19. It was determined by an IOC hearing on April 4 that he should be punished. Freibergs, who plays collegiately at Bowling Green, will have his eighth place diploma withdrawn according to the IOC ruling. Freibergs may face a ban of two years for first-time offenders and is considered “excluded” from the Sochi Games.

Freibergs was requested on 20 February 2014, at around 00:15 a.m. immediately after the completion of his participation in the Men’s Play-offs Quarterfinals – Canada versus Latvia match, to provide a urine sample for a doping control. Dr. Richard Budgett (the “IOC Medical Director”), as representative of the Chairman of the IOC Medical Commission, pursuant to Article 6.2.1 of the IOC Anti-Doping Rules Applicable to the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, in 2014 (the “Rules”), was informed on 22 February 2014 by the Head of the WADA Accredited Laboratory in Sochi, of an adverse analytical finding on the A sample of the above-noted urine.

The analytical report of the laboratory analysis of the A sample, issued by the WADA Accredited Laboratory in Sochi, dated 22 February 2014, indicated the presence of dehydrochloromethyl-testosterone metabolite 18-nor-17b-hydroxymethyl-17a-methyl-4-chloro-5b-androst-13-en-3a-ol (a prohibited substance that belongs to the category of non-specified exogenous Anabolic Androgenic Steroid, in Class S1). The analytical report of the laboratory analysis of the B sample, prepared by the Head of the WADA Accredited Laboratory in Sochi, confirmed the presence of the prohibited substance dehydrochloromethyl-testosterone metabolite 18-nor-17b-hydroxymethyl-17a-methyl-4-chloro-5b-androst-13-en-3a-ol in the B sample.

This is the second instance of a Lativa hockey team member failing anti-doping tests. On February 22, the IOC announced that Vitalijs Pavlovs had tested positive for the stimulant Methylhexaneamine. The hockey player claimed the stimulant was in food supplements recommended by the doctor of his KHL team, Dinamo Rig. His defense was not accepted by the IOC and the International Olympic Committee outlined the list of sanctions against Pavlovs. He was immediately disqualified from the quarterfinal match versus Canada.

The 24-year-old Pavlovs tested positive for Methylhexaneamine (dimethylpentylamine). It was announced by the IOC Disciplinary Commission that the Athlete shall be excluded from the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014, and shall have his Olympic identity and accreditation card immediately cancelled. The analytical report of the laboratory analysis of the A sample, issued by the WADA Accredited Laboratory in Sochi, dated 21 February 2014, indicated the presence of Methylhexaneamine (dimethylpentylamine). The Athlete requested the analysis of the B sample, which occurred on Saturday 22 February 2014 at 4:00 p.m., at the WADA Accredited Laboratory in Sochi, in the presence of the Athlete’s representative, Ms. Liga Cirule. The analytical report of the laboratory analysis of the B sample, prepared by the Head of the WADA Accredited Laboratory in Sochi, was communicated to the IOC. Such report confirmed the presence of the prohibited substance Methylhexaneamine (dimethylpentylamine) in the B sample.

Stephan Bonnar And Dave Herman Fail Drug Tests

@Stephan Bonnar and @Dave Herman, who both competed at UFC 153 on October 13, have failed to clear post-fight drug tests.

The Ultimate Fighter’ season 1 runner-up, Bonnar, who lost to Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 153 via TKO, tested positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone, announced his retirement from the sport after the bout.

Drostanolone or Masteron is an anabolic androgenic steroid that is a part of the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) family and commonly used in cutting cycles. Primarily used to treat breast cancer patients, it inhibits the production of estrogens by inhibiting the conversion  of testosterone to estrogen and is commonly used by amateur and professional sportsmen as it helps them gain from a more refined look to muscles. Since it is characterized by low water retention, muscle lines are more distinct and is commonly sold under the names, Masteron propionate and Masteron enanthate.

One of the most iconic names in Ultimate Fighting Championship history, Stephan Bonnar competed as a light heavyweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and was the runner up on season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV. Best known for having never been submitted, he trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the legendary Carlson Gracie and has also made appearances as an analyst on the ESPN2 series MMA Live and for UFC broadcasts on the FOX television networks. This is his second positive test for anabolic steroids, the first of which followed his UFC 62 defeat to Forrest Griffin in August 2006 in a fight that is regarded by many as the most responsible for attracting casual fight fans to mixed martial arts. Bonnar tested positive for the banned substance Boldenone and was given a suspension for nine months besides a fine of $5,000. The 35-year-old Bonnar announced his retirement from mixed martial arts a little more than two weeks after the loss and finished his career with a record of 15-8. The use of Drostanolone by Bonnar is seen by many as the reason why he so quiet about his retirement from mixed martial arts and allowed Dana White to make the announcement for him.

Dave Herman, tested positive for marijuana metabolites, the same drug for which UFC welterweight Nick Diaz is presently suspended. He was submitted by Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the co-main event of UFC 153 for his third loss in a row and also failed to clear a pre-fight drug screen issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation back in 2011 that makes UFC 153 his second failed drug test in less than two years. Dave Herman, an American mixed martial artist who competes in the heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, made his professional mixed martial arts debut on December 31, 2006. The UFC fighter fought for a variety of promotions including Bellator Fighting Championships, Shark Fights, and World Victory Road.

Marc Ratner, the UFC vice president of regulatory affairs, said twenty-two fighters out of 24 tested negative and two fighters tested positive. Punishments for the fighters will be issued sometime next week, Ratner said.

One of the other benefits generally associated with use of Trenbolone is that it encourages the count of red blood cells that further increases fresh oxygen transportation capability of the body. The anabolic steroid is also valuable in the withdrawal of endogenous androgen development and reestablishing the production of natural androgenic hormonal agent or testosterone. Tren use also encourages appetite and decreases extra fat being stored in the body besides having a good impact on metabolic rate of the body.

The suggested dosage of Trenbolone acetate is 37.5-75.0 mg per day though some athletes use Tren in amounts of 100 mg per day. The anabolic androgenic steroid should always be used after the advice of a certified doctor and Tren use should only be for lawful and healthcare reasons. Sportsmen looking for a cutting cycle may use Tren with Winstrol or Primobolan; some athletes use Trenbolone and stack it with Dianabol or Testosterone while some choose stacking Tren with Durabolin or Equipoise.

Steroids not first preference for treating sore throatEven though corticosteroids are generally prescribed and used to treat sore throats based on their inflammation-quelling powers, there is not much of evidence suggesting the same.

This finding was disclosed to Reuters by study co-author Dr. Brian H. Rowe of the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

It was remarked by Rowe that steroids should not be prescribed unless the benefits outweigh the risks and the same was supported by team reports in the journal Academic Emergency Medicine.

It was suggested by this review that most steroid users in the stage of adolescence do not seem to be influenced by sports performance or athletic competition to take steroids.

The study was conducted by a collaboration of researchers from around the country coordinated by Jason Cohen, Psy.D. candidate and made use of a web-based survey of nearly 2,000 males in the United States.

It was also highlighted that most steroid users are careful in following planned drug regimens in a combination with a healthy diet, exercises, and ancillary drugs.
